Feelings have no place in sports...

Although rarer, I've seen some pretty caustic tough-guy behavior from some of those soccer moms, though.

No, it's because Moms run the show.

I've seen a mother insist a son quit a team because he was not a starter. The father said that was an incorrect response. She gave him the glare of death (he probably thought about his sex life and personal fortune vanishing) and conceded to her. She proceeded to tell the kid he was the best on the team but needed to find a better team to play for. Coaching youth basketball for 8 years has taught me a lot about this topic.

If you want to blame the husband, you can. He'd certainly have something else to blame.

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, Dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, Dad
I don't know when, but we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, Dad
I don't know when, but we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son
I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin' home son
I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad
We're gonna have a good time then

Going further off topic, one of the best things I ever saw was when my son played t-ball there was a kid that wanted to play but didn't want to run the bases much. He'd run to first then protest. His dad would than carry him from base to base on hits or walks. Quite a sight. He would have an absolute meltdown if his dad wouldnt carry him to the next base.

Failure.

Epic. And you know if his backbone is that small with the kid, it's non-existent with the mom.

My "personal fortune" was taken against my will, but in the end I have my sack back and my kids will know the "real" me better.

The generation that complains the most about participation trophies etc are the ones handing them out and that created the culture. Blame your generation for handing them out not the kids who receive them.

I blame General Motors and this guy. GM for encouraging us to move away from the extended family and out to the suburbs, and Spock for being the "accepted" resource for all the newly independent moms, freed at last from the doinion of their mothers, sisters, aunts, sisters-in-law, and mothers-in-law

I blame soccer moms and the feminization of boys. Moms are an ever bigger role in sports and the ones I've seen have been harmful to competition, development and growth. Sorry if that offends you.

Not at all. I agree with you.

But not all comeptition has to be bloodthirsty, win-at-all-costs competition.

I'm a decent athlete, played QB and WR, every infield position except catcher, Ultimate, Volleyball, and more. But I never had the skillz or the extreme want-to to be a real competitor,

Doesn't mean I don't enjoy the game - I love to PLAY, win or lose doesn't matter to me.

But I'm glad that there are people out there with the skillz and the want-to, and I want them to WANT TO give 100% on the field for our Bulls, and I will give 100% from the other side of the tube. I've been called Ramsey more than once, LOL

There is a difference between safety and coddle. Wearing a helmet is safe.

Not wanting your child to feel the disappointment of losing is coddling m

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
