The theory still holds. No official visit = no commit. :D

Frustrating... he'll struggle to see the field at Va Tech, but would have instantly been the best QB on our roster even though he's a project.

On his way up to Virginia, he should stop off and say hello to Tyler Cameron.

Bad decision, for my fellow Jupiter resident.  He got beat out by a true freshmen, and barring injury, would never start.  Sad, but hope he catches on somewhere else, as he seems like a nice enough kid (still surprised he dumped USF for low level Wake).

Dwayne Lawson, once a heralded top prospect at quarterback, now is leaving the Virginia Tech football program with just nine college passes to his name.

Tech announced Friday that Lawson has been granted his release from the Hokies’ program and will enroll at Hutchinson Community College (Kansas) upon completion of his summer course work.

“Our coaches and staff at Virginia Tech invested significant effort in providing Dwayne the support and resources to be successful as a both a student and an athlete, as did Coach Beamer and his staff,” said Tech coach Justin Fuente in a statement released by the school. “After conversation with Dwayne, he felt leaving our football program would be in his best interest. We wish Dwayne the best at Hutchinson Community College.”

Lawson took part in the Hokies’ first fall practice Thursday. In the portion that was open to the media, Tech’s third-string offense had to re-run a play he was quarterbacking when Lawson, twice, went through his progressions without delivering a pass. That prompted new offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen to yell at Lawson, “throw the ball.”

A source said the previous coaching staff thought Lawson hadn’t mastered the offense last season and that’s why his playing time was limited.

Lawson, a 6-foot-6, 231-pound sophomore from Tampa, Fla., played in five games last year and threw just nine passes in a limited role, completing three of them for 51 yards. He threw seven of those passes in the Hokies’ 42-3 win over Furman in the second game of the season.

Lawson came out of Hillsborough High ranked as the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback in the nation by Rivals, and the No. 29 quarterback overall by Scout.

He was part of a quarterback competition this spring that involved senior Brenden Motley and junior college transfer Jerod Evans, who emerged as the leaders for the job, and freshman Josh Jackson and walk-on Jack Click (Deep Run High School).

This fall, the Hokies added another walk-on from the Richmond area, Chase Mummau, a former Lee-Davis High School standout, to the quarterback lineup.

The Roanoke Times reported Friday that a source indicated Lawson was expected to face a suspension of some length for failing a drug test.

Lawson, a 6-foot-6, 231-pound rising sophomore from Tampa, Fla., failed multiple drug tests during his time with the Hokies and would've faced a suspension if he'd stayed at Tech, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

More importantly kids should pay attention to how different schools run a player through the mud when things go bad.  Pick the school who treats you like family.
