Why is this even a discussion??????

We already beat FSU. We NEVER. Won the big east. Shoot. We never have had a chance with 1 Big East game to go.

Two things. As great as the FSU win was in '09, it turned out to be the worst FSU team in 30 years. I can't see this Nole team going 6-6. Second, what if we win the BE, but in a 8-5 BCS stomping UConn type manner?

Just adding to the conversation.

At least we won. USF is so far a little engine that can't. Except for 1 big game or two a year.

We keep saying the Big East sux, but can't win it. So what's that say about us?

BE championship without question...

we don't know the BE's future and soon we might not have the opportunity to get BCS type hardware.

I'll take the win over FSU. It's the BIGGEST home game in our history - and I doubt there will be another game in the immediate future anywhere near as big (unless an undefeated Boise comes to Tampa for the last game of the season and we're both undefeated). The FSU game comes against a program considered among the elite in the nation this season and the program currently considered the best in Florida. It's on national television. There is way more at stake with this season's FSU game.

Do I want to lose a game or two in the Big East? No. However, our own impressions of the Big East don't help. The conference is rock solid from top to bottom... yet we pretend a second place finish in the Big East is not good enough. Who cares if we run the Big East if we lose to programs such as Miami and FSU IMO. The kids we want the most are looking at FSU and UM before they consider USF when it comes to recruiting. The new doors that would be open if we knocked off both programs in one year would speak volumes about the overall direction of the program. Just my two cents... looking at the big picture.

**** ... Pretty compelling argument, and I'm wavering a bit, but I'm still thinking I want to get to a BCS bowl before they're gone and we only have two years to do that, this being our best chance out of those two (unless Asiantii IS really going to be "Cam Newton" as a freshman) .... even though as a fan base I don't think we're strong enough for a BCS bowl yet.

I wavered and voted for "Big East" before reading the comments, and think I've wavered back to FSU. I guess you can dream up any number of scenarios with this, but realistically if we're talking big picture and USF's future, it still won't do us much good to win the Big East, but lose to FSU and Miami on the way. That would likely at best put us at 9-3 (6-1) and ranked somewhere #20-#25 as the Big East champ (or even possibly at 8-4(5-2) and as an unranked conference champ). I don't think winning the Big East during the "transition" year would do much for our cred (did it really help Pitt?), especially with losing to 2 instate rivals in the same year and possibly be unranked before the bowl game.

I think for the good of the Big East and USF, its a better overall scenario if we do beat FSU (even if we do still lose to Miami) and finish second in the Big East at 5-2. That would put us 9-3 (5-2) (possibly at 10-2 if we knock of Miami as well) and likely still ranked somewhere #20-#25 before our bowl, but also likely mean that we have a Big East champ (Rutgers or Louisville - both of which should do no worse than 4-1 OOC) that is either 10-2 or 9-3 and also likely ranked. Having two Big East teams finish in the top 25 going into next year with the addition of Boise would do a lot to help bolster the Big East conference cred. And sadly with the way things are moving forward, USF's future is likely tied into the Big East's ability to hold onto at least equal footing with the ACC and part of the Big 6.

Big East championship, no doubt. Even a decisive win over FSU would be forgotten by year's end if we lose out in the Big East again. Given all the circumstances, with pending conference realignments and our own tenuous posiition in the haves vs. have nots split in college football, failure to capture Big East this year coud have longterm detrimental effects on our program. We need it badly this year.

FSU

Is being champion of this league very meaningful? I'd say it’s a novelty. Imagine if we were in C-USA asking the same question; what would your answer be then? Unfortunately, the rest of the sports world does not see much difference between the BE and C-USA at this point in time. The only way to improve the status of our conference is to win the OOC games...especially against the ACC.

Are BCS bowls really that big a deal, except for the championship game? What has it done for UCONN/Cinci to play in them?

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

    Terry Lucas, 09/26/22
