Memphis center Dominic Woodson was involved in a physical altercation with a football player in which the football player was the aggressor, assaulting one of the Memphis academic advisors and throwing Woodson to the ground, according to a report from the Memphis Commercial-Appeal.

The paper obtained a copy of the police report.

Robert Davis, a 5-foot-8 redshirt freshman running back, was the football player involved in the incident, which was the result of a dispute over a girl.

Here’s how the Commercial-Appeal described the incident:

Woodson and Davis were involved in a verbal disagreement — over a female, a source told The CA last week — that became physical after Davis grabbed U of M Associate Director of Athletic Academics Kristin Williams and “shoved her to the floor†to get to Woodson.

The 5-8, 170-pound Davis then lunged at Woodson, according to the report, and took the 6-10, 290-pound forward to the ground, resulting in “minor sheet rock damage to the walls in the area as a result of the assault.â€

Memphis head coach Josh Pastner has not said whether or not Woodson will be punished for this incident, and if Davis was the aggressor, Woodson may be off the hook. The problem is that Woodson’s mouth has gotten him into trouble before. He was kicked off the bench during a game against Central Florida last season and suspended for three games for cursing.

Woodson was also suspended for the Tiger’s trip to Raleigh for the NCAA tournament and was ejected from a win over Gonzaga for this flagrant foul.

Sounds like Woodson got a piece of Davis' lady or it was some kind of lovers tiff.

Davis wasn't dismissed, but was granted a release. Interesting.

Something set the guy off, as he's giving up 14 inches & 100+ pounds...and still took the guy down.  Basketballers aren't famous for fighting skills...usually windmills.

That said, you don't shove down a woman (and a school official) to the ground to get after somebody.  Not the kind of player we want at USF...so maybe we dodged a bullet with him opting for Memphis.

Hope he learns from this, and gets back on track.  Easy to lose your cool in a fit of passion, but as an adult with your career on the line, you have to restrain yourself.

sounds like classic "short guy syndrome".

... versus thug mentality. Trouble from the get go.

Off the field issues notwithstanding, we have a stable of running backs now who are all preferable to this guy, so I doubt he would find a spot here now even if he would have before.

Still could have been a nice grab with HS stats at 12yds per carry, Hillsborough County all time rushing record (2221yds/26TDs), and a 4.28 40 time

Other schools shied away from him for a (good) reason, it seems.  Stats are nice, but if they come with trouble, it's not worth it.

Even if Davis doesn't come with some baggage, I don't think his size would lend itself too well to that run offense that I keep waiting for Taggart to unleash.

Put a small guy behind a bruiser like Swanson, and let him pop out into open & be gone.  I can see D. Johnson being that back (but much bigger).
