I attribute that to bad 3rd down play calling. Those blitzes are killing us b/c we can not defend the pass.

At a crossroads of truth here. IF we have a coach who has coached a defense that has given up 150plus POINTS over the last 4 games a) he’s incompetent and needs to be gone now or b) he’s doing the best with what he has and we really suck that bad and we need another washing.

I hope it is b, but I am starting to think maybe a little bit of both.  The running defense and tackles for loss or better, but the passing game maybe worse. The middle of the field is open for the other teams almost every passing down.

So even though I rather have Brian-Jean Mary as our defensive coordinator, I realize that we can't afford him. He is making 600K a year at TENN as a position coach. No way he takes a 50% pay cut. Tom Allen might be our best option if he gets fired. With his buyout, we can get him "for the low".  If not then F-it, let's give Todd Orlando a chance. Technically we did improve on defense. Anyway here are my goals for this defense:

Original – 25-30 sacks, 85+ TFLs (On Track), and 10 INTs (On Track)

Updated for the last 2 games (bowl game not included)- 20-22 sacks, 85+ TFLs (On Track), and 10 INTs this year (Back on track). I'll be happy to just reach 20 sacks this year. As for TFLs, we are still on track for 85+ and can even get to 90 TFLs and 7-8 ints. I would like for us to improve from last year.

We are not the worst defense anymore. The defense won the game for usf against temple when the offense was out of gas the second half. We are no where near the Leavitt defenses , but there is tangible evidence we are getting better even if by a little bit. When is the last time that we could say the defense won a game for the team?

Much better effort from the D this past Saturday. Will always take a defensive TD to make it even better.

The biggest difference this year compared to last year is that our biggest DT/NT is 320 Ibs and looks like this. We have this guy for another 3-4 years.

I'm going to give Todd Orlando a pass for this year.

The main positive of this year is the turnaround on defense. We are already on pace to surpass a few totals from last year. With 9 games left, there is no reason we can't get 25-30+ sacks, 85+ TFLs, and 10 INTs this year.

Here is my final comparison for the regular season. I think Jason Vaughn would have gotten us to 25 sacks. Technically, the defense improved.....I still want Tom Allen back.

My original targeted goals -
25-30+ sacks
85+ TFLs
10 INTs
