Can we get some hoops talk going? We’re about to step up in competition, but I’m interested to read what those who have been following think of this team so far.

THINGS I LIKE . . .
Tyler Harris is the best perimeter shooter we’ve had in some time and has some a-hole in him out there on the floor, competitiveness.

Selton Miguel brings instant offense off the bench. He comes in ready to score.

Ryan Conwell is legit. He is in a shooting slump right now, but his stroke is good - unlike what we saw with a guy like Caleb Murphy. He will shake out of that slump. The rest of his game is pretty mature for a guy his age.

Sam Hines does the dirty work and has begun to develop his offensive game. He’s even capable from 3 this year, which wasn’t part of his arsenal last season.

Jamir Chaplin and Keyshawn Bryant hit the offensive glass. Both have crazy hops and are hitting the glass hard.

And what I like most - we’re developing an identity with guys playing their roles and sticking to their strengths, not trying to do too many things they’re not good at.

THINGS I DON’T LIKE . . .
Captain Obvious - the FT line. At the end of games, if it’s close, it has to be Harris or Conwell at the line for us or we’re cooked.

Corey Walker has a bunch of talent, but he still hasn’t embraced it. He shows signs here and there, but could be so much more.

I know he puts up numbers, but I’m still not sure if I like Russell Tchewa or not. He misses a lot of bunnies and wouldn’t you like to see him just go up and jam some of those shots? Use that awesome size. Play angry and dominate.

That said about Tchewa, when he gets in foul trouble in conference play, we have no post sub. Teams will use that to their advantage against us. We also have no real PG sub. It’s by committee right now and when it’s Miguel handling, the ball sticks. He doesn’t move it. He just looks to go 1-on-1.

Chaplin still isn’t a reliable 3-point shooter. He makes one here and there, but there have been games already where we could have run away and hid if he could have made a wide open three at the right time, but . . . clang. Same at the FT line. Argh!

Just some quick, random musings. I’m interested to read yours.

One thing I'll add about Chaplin is, from just a little I've heard from CBG talking, is that I'm likening him as more of a defensive specialist, kind of like the role Hugh Robertson had ...... I think that's who I'm thinking of from that team.

Watched a replay of the NJIT game and the one dunk attempted he clanged off the back of the rim.  He jumps a little like me which is a little.

The lack of interior depth is definitely my biggest concern. We will have to be shooting lights out to survive against teams with a decent interior if Tchewa is out for whatever reason. We aren't quite skilled enough to play effective small-ball, IMO.

Aren't these things related? Walker is playing out of position I think.

I'm really seeing Tyler's leadership on the court. He has fully embraced being the floor general and is first to praise a great play by a teammate but also the first to put an arm around someone who erred.

Tchewa's visa issues may have kept from hitting his stride until now, but he is starting to be more confident. I also like the fact that he's comfortable from the line.  I do agree that we need to work on depth at the 5.

I think your assesment of the team is 99% in agreement with mine.  I think Chaplins FT% will trend back towards what it was last year which will help.  His 3pt % I thought would be better then it is but he really does alot of the little things to help this team win as does Sam Hines.  Tyler is a scorer but I still thinks he takes too many shots not that there are many options.  Bryant was looking like he would be a solid contributer but since his hiatis he is an enigma.  IF he can be more of a scorer this team could get dangerous.  Selton is doing great in his role coming off the bench and is a solid scorer.  He needs to work on going to his left as teams will shut down that 6 ft runner going to the right.  Cory is the ultimate in Frustration so much there if he would put in the work and attitude.  We need him come conference play.  I love Conwell, he can be special is he continues to develop.  He is slumping the last few weeks but could be very important come Feb and March.  Russ is a solid double double with great hedge on the defensive end.  I have high hope for the rest of the year.  I actually thought we would have been (and should be) closer to 10-3 right now

I think most of us that only had hoops during their tenure and love the game went absent once we were losing to trash early this year. CBG had a short leash and we gave up.  I will watch Memphis only because I am a Glutton for punishment.  We have one big who can’t play D or jump and we don’t make FT’s but have developed some 3 point consistency.  Interesting to see if Miguel can create in the conference as he has pre-conference . I expect 5 wins in conference but this will be your most ignorant take on the thread because I have watched about 20 percent of their games this year and know little and may actually care less, hoping I have something to cheer for.

Not sure. He is too small to guard post guys, but he doesn’t have good enough feet or quickness to defend guys out on the perimeter.

I totally get it, but I think this team is worth following. They’re not great, by any stretch, but they’re going to play hard and they finally do have some guys who can score the ball. We’ve had teams play hard but they’ve been so handicapped offensively that there was no real chance to get over the hump. We’re still not there, but at least we have a fighting chance to put the ball in the basket with this bunch. Without the slow start from Harris, we’d be 10-3 right now.
