The NCAA Division I Council voted Wednesday to allow athletes in the association's most prominent sports to change schools once during their undergraduate careers without having to sit out for a season, a person familiar with the outcome told USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the vote won't be finalized until the Council adjourns two days of meetings Thursday.

This will really impact programs who do a great job of identifying and developing overlooked talent. By not having any deterrent for transferring, some of those players then can make the jump to bigger/higher exposure programs.

I'm glad to hear that this will be limited to one transfer per student-athlete while the are an undergrad, but this is essentially a form of free agency for student-athletes for the sports where this wasn't already allowed. Hopefully it won't be to the level we have seen this off season.

I hope this move doesn’t end up hurting kids and their futures. I can see unconstructive hopping happening. I hope these guys are more cautious than I think they are.

I always said, if coaches can change jobs without sitting out a year and his/her career can be 40 years why must the student athlete with a 4 or 5 year college career sit out one year.

This seems the right thing and a fait accompli.  Everyone should have the freedom to make their own path to success and their own mistakes.

I say we open it up and put everyone on 1 year scholarships, if they can bounce then colleges should be able to cut ties as well, every man for himself, and women for herself and whatever you identify as for itself.  Got to stay PC in this woke environment 😀

Yes but is it truly enforced the way it should be, I say after each year cut people for performance, this is not done consistently or aggressively as it should be IMO.  Did CJS cut most of those guys or would he have cut them had they not entered the portal?  I really don’t know, any education would be appreciated.

Every student athlete is on a one year scholarship that is renewed solely at the discretion of the head coach. I am surprised you did not know this.

Frisco,

I know you are/were trying to be funny, but you missed the mark on this one.

Last I checked the scoreboard doesn't have a spot for current bank balance on it.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
