Game 1, okay, season jitters, etc. They all get a pass. Game 2... It clearly shows me that they don't know USF football and how QF and the guys operate. They are trying to do whatever they did offensively at Texas (that got them all fired).

Part of it might be Gilbert is trying to figure out what if any power running plays can we run...and the answer is none. Save your time it wont work here. If this was the first game I would be really worried but we saw it opened up some in the first game so we know the plays are in the system they just didn't call them much for whatever reason. No power run. We can use basic sweeps screens and options without using the complete playbook. .... and ya, it does make you wonder if they watched last years film. You think that would be among the first things a new coach would do. Edited September 3, 2017 by Gismo

The more we let inferior opponents hang around deep into games, the more they will believe that they can beat us and the harder they will fight. I think a big component of our success last season was that we could score at will and score early. Feel like that had a big impact on the psyche of the opponents and our players as well. TBH, our team wasn't built to get into defensive slugfests or grind it out type of games -- we also don't have the depth on defense to be successful there. This is a logical explanation--that, and it was somewhat wet out there so the ground game gets more reps. Personally, and since I'm not the coach it doesn't count at all, I'd rather open up the playbook from game one and let them get used to executing ALL the sets. The logic for holding back really only applies to the "next" game, and if we're supposedly on our way to a CC I'd think you'd want to be polished and as close to second-nature for your entire playbook as you can get.
