He kind of did, but had time to turn it around. Strong had as many wins his first year as Taggart did in two here.

McNeese State=bombed out. He also makes sure to leave right when the program is peaking rather than "bomb out" due to the normal fluctuations of lesser programs.

I would also like to add home loss to FAU and home shutout to UCF = bombed out

Yea, the Taggart legend will only grow over time.  Few will remember how we very nearly canned him last year.

Was a bowl game enough to save his job?  Does he have to win it?  It was pretty touch and go.

I always thought the term "bombed out" wasn't a game specific thing but more tenure based ... "CSS bombed out at Texas".

The biggest boondoggle in all of this is the paltry buyout if the University terminates him without cause. USF will only have to pay him $192,307.69, which represents 20 weeks of his $500,000 base salary. That really is unbelievable considering Strong's buyout with the University. This guy seems to be committed to USF football. Kudos to Harlan and Company for negotiating such a great contract. I would have like a slightly higher buyout figure in years 1 and 2, but, given the low buyout to Strong in the event of termination without cause, I can live with it.

Some of his assistance have a similar contract to Strong so we are likely back loading their contracts as well.

Do we have a link for this? Would be awesome if true!

We also don't know how Taggart will perform at Oregon, so the potential for success in the future by either coach is a wash.

Also, you focus on the future, but ignore the past. Yes, Strong struggled at Texas, but Taggart also struggled at USF for two years and, but for finally letting his players play to their strengths, was almost fired himself.

Strong and Taggart were both also successful at UofL and WKU respectively, but Strong's stint there resulted in a Sugar Bowl win against Florida. Taggart got WKU to a pizza bowl, but departed for USF before the game.

On paper (at least) Strong has clearly accomplished more than Taggart in his career. I consider it an upgrade. Not knocking Taggart, just is what it is. Feel free to disagree.

Yeah, Strong accomplished more than Taggart at Louisville, but let's remember, Strong was 10-2 when he went to a big bowl, just like Willie was this year, but BE had an auto bid and I believe Louisville won a tiebreaker to get BCS bid (could be wrong about that).  If AAC was under old system, USF would have likely been in a BCS bowl (3 way tie with Navy and Temple and USF probably would have been selected under tie breaker formulas).  Willie was probably also a 4th quarter injury at Temple by QF away from playing and beating a P5 program in the Cotton bowl this year.  There wasn't much difference in Louisville and this year's USF.  Strong has had 2 good years in his career, riding a hot Teddy Bridewater.  Every other year was mediocre or poor.  Look up his career records.  His winning percentage is entirely based off 2 good years.  I won't say he would have, but Taggart likely would have equaled that 2 year run, had he stayed next year.  We all know that.

I'm not saying CCS isn't a good hire.  I like the hire a lot.  But to say USF upgraded, is well, wrong.  We don't know how it will play out.  One thing is for sure, Taggart had the bus absolutely rolling.  Will Charlie keep it rolling?

Nothing is EVER for sure. Nothing.

OK, let me rephrase for you.  With the pathetic OOC schedule and favorable conference schedule, barring unforeseen injuries to key players, Taggart was 90%+ likely to win 11 games next year.  That better for you.

So it looks like we were able to back load it and Texas found that acceptable?  Solid.

Just my uneducated hunch, but I'm not sure Texas had much of a legal leg to stand on to determine what his pay with USF would be, and how it would be disbursed.  They are contractually obligated to pay him $10M no matter what per the contract, so recoup of any funds after that is just bonus for them.

He had to use best efforts to find employment. Part of that, presumably, would be to use best efforts to get a fair contract. Any argument that Texas would make against his new contract would be very difficult. First, there didn't appear to be any better offers out there. Second, they had just fired the guy themselves based upon his performance. It is hard to argue that he is worth more than $1,000,000 annually at this point given Texas's desire to rid him from their program.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
