The idea is to create stability either through continuity of coaching or financially. My idea is not far fetched. We are getting $1.7 million for Taggart's buyout as it is. The real idea is to prevent coaches from coming in for only one or two years and then taking off. If we were to hire Kiffin now, he comes in and goes 11-2, and then takes a job at Texas A&M or the like, we end up totally screwed. We have no continuity of coaching and philosophy, we have no consistency with recruiting, and our program falls back another 4 years. The large buyout would either prevent the cut and run by a coach like Kiffin or have us in an immediate position where we have the funds to make a "splash" hire of our own.

My idea just requires our AD to stand firm in what we expect from an incoming coach and to use their own promises of being committed to building something here against them. Your idea requires something short of an act of God by the NCAA that would go against what the richest and most influential member institutions would want.

it will never happen. good coaches would never tie their hands like that. sounds like Kiffin will stay at Bama making his millions instead of moving to Houston for that very reason.

Kiffin is going to LSU to be their OC if he doesn;t get a HC job. Saban is going to be pissed.

The NCAA needs to implement a non compete provision which would result in a complete bar of raiding coaches while under contract.  This is the only fair way, I see, to an overhaul of this big problem.  You want to pay a coach a zillion dollars to leave his position at another school that is fine, but don't do it while the coach is under contract.  This will benefit coaches with increased salaries, but will also preserve the status quo of the athletic departments while its coaches are under contract.

Coaches would only sign 2 or 3 year contracts at the G5 schools.

You aren't getting it. The ultra-high buyout would be for 2 seasons. After that it would be much more reasonable (around $2 million) which Oregon just gladly paid to CWT. This is again about stability. If we are going to vet and develop coaches, we are going to get paid for it. If you think a school like LSU or even UNC cares about a $2 million buyout you are grossly mistaken. That is chump change for these schools and they will gladly pay it to get the coach that they want.

What is the amount you propose?

Who holds the money? We do.

I would build it into the contract that if you quit you owe USF $x,000,000.00 or that amount equal to your remaining contract, which ever is higher. If we let you go cause you can't win, we'll pay you 1/2 your remaining contract.

Don't like it? Go find another job that will give you the opportunity to make $2mil+ a year. Think about it. If you're good enough to quit on us, somebody's gonna pay the buyout. If you suck, you still get paid. This is the G5 baby, and if you're going to use us as a stepping stone we have to protect ourselves against the big boys.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

“In my mind, I’m kind of like, ‘OK, excuses over'. We know what we need to do. We’ve got the right team together, and now we move forward, and we’ll evaluate and be accountable to each other, including myself, from this point forward.”

    Michael Kelly
