Are we paying for going cheap on replacing DC Allen?

I'm not ranting against DC Woodie, but I am worried that we dropped a good bit after DC Allen left for Indiana, and promoting from within someone who has no experience coaching a big time program was risky.  He can recruit & the kids love him, but that's not enough.

I think the 5-2 defense can work against most AAC teams (not likely v Navy), but against run heavy teams, we need more LB presence. Against FSU, our DL got pushed around, and with only 2 LBs, its very hard for those 2 guys to tackle Dalvin Cook, oft times while being blocked.  Which then leaves DBs to tackle their RB's...not ideal.

Unless the D gets better soon, the over/under on most of our games will be 70-80, and we'll struggle.

I'm not sure who our other choices were at DC, or if Woodie will eventually right the ship, but I'd be curious what you guys think.

My only thought (that I'll share) about the defense is;  Although our base D is the 4-2, for this game, we should have gone with a traditional 4-3 and put 8 or 9 in the box.  Everyone knew that, especially after last week, that FSU was going to rely heavily on Cook.

The mean level has slowly been drawn out of this team over the last few games. These guys aren't flying, hitting, or playing tough. This d is looking Coshesque.

So, yes going for the easy fix did hurt us. I'm just not sure how bad it will hurt us in conference play.

Too early to tell. Let's get a few games into the conference season first.

So far we have looked soft, but the real answer will come a few games into the conference games.

I thought yesterday was a pretty real answer: Fail

we're 1/3 into the season.  Frankly, that Towson St converted 4 of 5 (if I recall) 4th down plays was a hint of what's to come.  We're young & have talent, but I think we need to look at 4-3 again.  The DL need to disrupt & penetrate, and the LBs need to plug holes.

Yeah it's definitely not too early to tell. You can tell in 3 out of 4 of the games.

Especially after Kelly saying to the press last night that the loss to Duke wasn't because of coaching.
