It blew my mind for a while that in the 21st century, ESPN has no possible way to just offer their product on a standalone basis or with at least a mini-package. There are plenty of cord nevers out there like me who never would have bothered with cable that are now going to go this route. that's the last thing ESPN wants. they get like $4 from every subscriber whether they watch or not. if they had to charge for people who actually watch then it would be closer to $12 per month(just a guess) to generate the same revenue. cable providers(becoming dumb pipes) going the way of the dodo will lead to conference shuffling being worthless. Big ten network won't get near the revenue. no way people that don't watch will be willing to pay $1.50 per month for it. all those big time contracts won't be worth anywhere near what they thought. This whole concept of cable "bundles" is so completely alien and stupid, it can only happen in a monopolized market. Once people have the ability to pick and choose, 90% of them will simply select the channels they want. No way will the little old lady of Pasadena keep ESPN or any other sports, and they know this. I'm really surprised Sling isn't offering the channels completely a la carte, but I guess it's just too early. It won't take that long, but it will happen. The internet is a great monopoly destruction machine

The internet is a great monopoly destruction machine I read an article that claimed espn was being paid far more in subscriber fees than it's worth as far as advertising revenue and eyeballs were concerned. it's only a matter of time when they will have to generate all that revenue on their own without the benefit of "basic' subscriber fees. all of these ridiculous contracts with these conferences(not to even mention the conference networks) will have to be reworked. I actually think in the long run the conferences will contract and consolidate with even fewer members (say top 30 similar to NFL) as nobody cares about vandy or duke football. The main reason I subscribe is for USF sports. That requires the sports package for an extra $5 a month. Standard Sling TV only has ESPN included, not ESPNU, or ESPN2(I think). My total is around $27 a month after taxes. I received a free Kindle Fire TV stick for signing up for 3 months. Quality is exactly like watching cable television. There are times where it freezes for buffering or lips aren't completely synched, but these instances are rare. It has all the channels I'm interested in. Food, Travel, TNT, TBS, CNN, AMC and they recently added History and H2. I recommend it. How do you watch CBS Sports Network?

I went to a watch party in Boston about 7 years ago and it was great. Since then I have never seen one posted or organized. Thought about doing this myself through the alumni association but time (and perhaps a little laziness) is always an issue.
