Here's good article explaining the roles, same one Hornz got the above picture from.

http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/ole-miss-football/ole-miss-rebels-may-talented-defense-sec/

While I did link the article, I think they switched the Husky and Stinger labels in the description, but have them correct in the image.

  • In the image they correctly identify the Husky position on the right, which is setup on the strong/run side. This is the hybrid run support "SLB" hence Husky.

  • On the left side you have you Nickel-type Stinger back which is lined up on the weak side of the play.  This is the "WLB" hybrid faster cover guy hence Stinger.

In that particular play the OL shifts over for run blocking leaving the Stinger free to sting the RB :)

Notice how he squared up the RB, wrapped up the RB, and planted the RB. Not throwing a shoulder and hoping the RB falls over him.

I wonder what a picture of a thousand words is worth?

Ha! In my field you can buy scientific PDFs with a few thousands words for about 20-30 bucks. I guess it depends on the content and its demand  :guinness:

Ok. All this USF football talk today has me no longer feeling under the weather, off to get some work done.

Are we expecting anything out of Mayes this year?  Where do you guys see the young, big time recruits fitting in right now?  Bayes, and Jackson?

Well Jackson, Black, and Brown are learning how to be pass rush DEs. They would be undersized but undersized fast guys have been successful in this system if they are put out in space split out. Bayes I would assume is battling Harris for playing time. Mayes has been a way from playing awhile but he's got everything you would want in a SDE too which is why USF has been so patient with him.

Bayes was our best recruit 2 years ago. He has to see the field in my opinion. I don't think Sanchez is bad at all, but Is he fast enough to be on the field against these spread offenses in our conference?

So wait...we are matching the scheme on both Offense and Defense to the talent pool that we've been recruiting from?
