Consensus Four-Star Recruit Gibbons Joins USF Football

2014 Top 15 linemen recruit joins USF program

TAMPA, OCT. 3, 2014 – Head Coach Willie Taggart and the USF Football program scored a major victory during the team’s bye week as Taggart announced Friday the addition of consensus four-star offensive tackle Reilly Gibbons (St. Petersburg) to the Bulls’ program.

The 6-6, 292-pound Gibbons originally committed to Stanford during the 2014 signing period, but elected to return home prior to enrolling. He is expected to enroll in classes on the USF campus and join the Bulls’ program in January. He joins a 2014 recruiting class that was already ranked the consensus No. 1 in the American Athletic Conference. He is the 11th member of USF’s 2014 class to have received first or second team all-state honors in Florida and the 10th to have received a four-star ranking from a recruiting service. He is the 13th member of the class from the Bay Area.

“Reilly is a big, strong, athletic and very intelligent offensive lineman who fits the mold of our program and the kind of power offense we want to run perfectly,” Taggart said. “He is very bright young man and another great Bay Area talent that we are thrilled to welcome to our program. We are excited to see what he can do when he joins our program in January.”

A graduate of St. Petersburg Catholic, Gibbons’ list of 47 scholarship offers was long and impressive including offers from Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami (FL), Mississippi State, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee. A Rivals Top 250 prospect, Gibbons was a consensus four-star recruit who was ranked a Top 20 player at his position nationally and 216th overall by Rivals. ESPN.com ranked him in the ESPN300 and the 15th best offensive tackle nationally.

Gibbons played for coach Steve Dudley at St. Petersburg Catholic where he earned first team Class 3A all-state honors in 2013. An All-Pinellas County and All-Suncoast first team pick, Gibbons was selected to participate in the 2014 Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, 2014 West Coast Bowl, 2014 Blue-Grey Bowl, 2014 Offense-Defense Bowl and 2013 Pinellas County All-Star Game. He was also selected to the 2014 Team USA U19 National Team.

A two-time team captain, Gibbons blocked for two running backs that ran for 1,000 yards in 2013. He also earned three varsity letters in basketball.

Rivals.com listed Gibbons as the Stanford recruit “most likely to become president of the United State” saying “it goes without saying that Stanford's recruits are some of the most intelligent and articulate in the nation. And even within that group, Reilly Gibbons stands out.”

Gibbons is now a Bull.

The USF Football program is in its 18th season and 15th at the FBS level. The Bulls have made six bowl appearances, including every season between 2005-10, and have four bowl game victories. USF has produced 14 All-America selections, 23 NFL Draft picks and reached the No. 2 ranking in the Associated Press Poll in 2007.

USF football season ticket renewals are available. Members may renew their tickets today online, by calling 1-800-GoBulls, or in person at the Ticket Sales and Service Center in the Sun Dome administrative offices (Gate B).

In fishin', this is what I'd call a WHOPPER! That's fantastic, glad this kid wanted to stay home. Wow, way to work it CWT.

Seems like a great get. I wonder what made him stay home instead of going out to Stanford? Hopefully just guilt over not committing to USF originally.

I guess the theory that Taggart can't get the kind of linemen that he needs to run his offense can be put to rest.

I expect we'll see all those that wanted him to design an offense around small 2 star linemen will be in here to eat crow.

I can't wait for Taggart to get a couple more classes under his belt. Teams in this conference will not be able to compete with the talent he is bringing in.

gone are the days of walk-ons in valuable starting positions. we may actually use all our scholarships and have to grey shirt like the big boys. no more handing out 5 or 6 scholarships to walk-ons every year like our last lazy recruiter did.

Why did he not go to Cali?

I think that I am happy that he is a home body.

That's the word so far. Apparently he left Stanford's team after fall camp so he should be available to play next year.

This kid is a beast and his younger brother is supposed to be just as good or better.  Already has offers from Ohio State, Cincy, Louisville and South Carolina.

Hopefully this turns into a two-for-one for USF!
