Yeah, it's the "saying there's a chance..." sort of scenario. Bottom line being that the top four teams play-off for a champion. Now, if you pray really, really hard and get some miracles thrown in your direction, it's technically possible for a non-P5 team to make the bracket. Notice the emphasis on both prayer and miracles when assigning the probability possibility of "we having a chance".

Here's a good outline:

"...add two more BCS level bowls in 2014-2015. Besides Fiesta, Sugar, Rose and Orange, they will add two more bowls, Cotton and Peach (formerly known as Chick-A-Fil). And the whole system will renamed as "College Football Playoff". Two of six bowls will be served as Playoff Semifinals. So there are only eight spots open. Five spots are reserved for Power Five Conference champions.  The three remaining spots are selected by a committee similar to basketball selection committee. Two will be at-larges from Power Five and the last spot will be selected from AAC, Mountain West, MAC, WAC, Sun-Belt and Conference USA."

...which gives you a pretty fair idea of the sort of miracles it would take for USF to play for this particular piece of hardware.

And is this speculation or fact?

Finally, did they finally rename the Peach Bowl back from the abomination it had become?

How can a team from the AAC "sneak" into the playoff? 3 straight undefeated seasons is my guess.

The Chick-Fil-A Bowl is an abomination?

AFAIC, it's always been the Peach Bowl.

That is total ********. Only one third of those games actually participate in the "playoffs" and they have the ***** to call it a "College Football Playoff" ....

Not sure what part you're wondering is speculation or fact but here's the part about the G5 gaining entry to the other bowls ....

How will the teams that are not in the playoff be selected for the other bowls that make up this new arrangement?

All conferences negotiated individual bowl contracts for their champions. Five conferences have arranged contracts for their champions to play in New Year’s bowl games — Atlantic Coast (Orange), Big Ten (Rose), Big 12 (Sugar), Pac-12 (Rose), and Southeastern (Sugar).

The highest ranked champion of the other five Football Bowl Subdivision conferences (the American Athletic, Conference- USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt), as determined by the selection committee, will play in one of the six New Year’s bowls. Other available berths will be awarded to the teams ranked highest by the committee. The committee will assign teams to bowls.

When the Fiesta, Cotton and Atlanta bowls are not hosting semifinal games, their participants will come from three sources: (1) The highest ranked champion among the five conferences listed in the paragraph above, (2) conference champions that are displaced when their contracted bowls host semifinals and (3) the remaining teams ranked highest in the committee’s rankings.

The committee will assign teams to the non-playoff bowls to create the most compelling matchups, while considering other factors such as geographic proximity, avoiding rematches of regular-season games and avoiding rematches of recent years’ bowl games.

...determined by the selection committee, will play in one of the six New Year’s bowls.

I think the bottom line here is that it is technically possible for USF to play for a Nat'l Championship. However, note that it is one - and only one - spot in the premier/New Year bowls that goes to a non P5 team. So, we ask ourselves, what are the odds that of all of the non P5 teams, USF is the highest ranked, and receives a spot - not in the playoff bracket - but in one of the premier bowls?

Had this been in place in 2013, UCF would have taken that slot as the highest ranked non P5. Going back one more year, assuming we don't include L'ville - it would have been Boise State @ #16.

It's not impossible....just an alarmingly steep hill. This is a good site for a quick background...

Let's win the conference for the first time in our history, then start whining about how unfair the system is to us.
