WTF? Never knew the lyrics before, other than the first two lines. Can't believe this survived a purge, and is STILL the state song

"Old Folks at Home", by Stephen Foster, 1851[4]

Way down upon de Swanee Ribber,

Far, far away,

Dere's wha my heart is turning ebber,

Dere's wha de old folks stay.

All up and down de whole creation

Sadly I roam,

Still longing for de old plantation,

And for de old folks at home.

Chorus

All de world am sad and dreary,

Eb-rywhere I roam;

Oh, darkeys, how my heart grows weary,

Far from de old folks at home!

2nd verse

All round de little farm I wandered

When I was young,

Den many happy days I squandered,

Many de songs I sung.

When I was playing wid my brudder

Happy was I;

Oh, take me to my kind old mudder!

Dere let me live and die.

3rd Verse

One little hut among de bushes,

One dat I love

Still sadly to my memory rushes,

No matter where I rove.

When will I see de bees a-humming

All round de comb?

When will I hear de banjo strumming,

Down in my good old home?

No way in hell this song gets played

Other bands have played this song for pregame...Florida did it for a while and more recently UCF did too. Lyrics aside, it's just not a great tune for a football game. Uptempo it sounds even more awkward. So I don't think anyone plays it anymore (although admittedly I haven't been to a UF or UCF pregame in a long time!). What HOT does works well, I think.

UK, Louisville, EKU, WKU, and other schools in Kentucky play the official state song, "My Old Kentucky Home", at home sporting events. The original lyrics of the song also contain the word "darkies", but the state mandated in the mid 1980's that the word be changed to people when the song is used in conjunction with any state organization.

We're talking about the tune, not the student section singing the song.

Plus the state has changed the lyrics, so I think there is no longer a problem at all.

Sorry man, but I reject the changes and the tune, because of the offensiveness of the original.

IMO, it is UN-redeemable.

I would have to agree

There's already negative connotations with the origins of the song

Last thing we need is to have something that causes division within the fan base, no matter how small the division can/would be

Depends on what section you're in.

I kid I kid.

Yeah I love these ideas. Maybe you could send to the the email address Harlan provided as feedback?

Charsibb, I respect your opinion, my friend. See you at watch parties this season!

I take it you don't care for Twain, eh? ;)

Haven't read him in years, since well before I saw the light. Would have to read them again and let you know.  My memories of Tom and Huck are good ones, though.
