I've always thought it would be pretty awesome to hear the HOT play an upbeat version of "The Old Folks at Home" or sometimes called "Suwannee River" (the state song of Florida) during our games. I don't think any other program in our state uses it and it would bring great state pride during games.

Just a thought but would love to hear what people think.

Not as is. Too slow. An upbeat marching band version might not be bad, though.

I agree, that's why i suggested an upbeat version. If you think about the song in your head in an upbeat way, it sounds PERFECT for a college football game.

IMO, the song reminds too much of "old" Florida which harkens thoughts of the steenking Gators ...

Why not go all the way and just have them play Dixie?

It's not our state song and Ole Miss plays that.

I think he was referencing the racial overtones of the lyrics....

This is a bad idea... there's already a movement to get it removed as the state song.... you'd see the same backlash if HOT tried to incorporated it here.

WTF? Never knew the lyrics before, other than the first two lines. Can't believe this survived a purge, and is STILL the state song

"Old Folks at Home", by Stephen Foster, 1851[4]

Way down upon de Swanee Ribber,
Far, far away,
Dere's wha my heart is turning ebber,
Dere's wha de old folks stay.
All up and down de whole creation
Sadly I roam,
Still longing for de old plantation,
And for de old folks at home.

Chorus
All de world am sad and dreary,
Eb-rywhere I roam;
Oh, darkeys, how my heart grows weary,
Far from de old folks at home!

2nd verse
All round de little farm I wandered
When I was young,
Den many happy days I squandered,
Many de songs I sung.
When I was playing wid my brudder
Happy was I;
Oh, take me to my kind old mudder!
Dere let me live and die.

3rd Verse
One little hut among de bushes,
One dat I love
Still sadly to my memory rushes,
No matter where I rove.
When will I see de bees a-humming
All round de comb?
When will I hear de banjo strumming,
Down in my good old home?
