Joey Johnston article in this mornings tribune mentions that the Oline has increased from an average of 290 to 310.  Here's hoping to a bigger, stronger, faster 2014 Bulls football team.

Bench press depends on the position.  Oline and Dline needs to have that punch that comes with a strong upper body.

it has more to do with the players we had i think.  we never recruited big strong guys...which is why we always got destroyed by the power running teams in the Big East.  Guys like Mims and Lynch are outside pass rush guys.  Bench Press is more of a DT thing.  And look at the past 4 or 5 years, total reps on bench is a very poor indicator of NFL success.

But if it makes you feel better, Terrell McClain had 29 reps a few years ago.

Long arms is a disadvantage for the bench press test.

Every one of our linemen should be able to bench press 30+ reps of 225. It doesn't just show upper body strength and stamina but also work ethic! I don't even play football and can do almost double the reps of Lynch and Mims. There are quite a few cornerbacks that have more upperbody strength than our defensive ends...

Sure, since only 8 out of the 56 DL and 10 of the 50 OL that were invited to the combine can do that.

The median of all linemen invited to the combine is 24.  If you throw out the ones that didn't lift, the median is 25.  The average of those that lifted is 25.3 with a standard deviation of 5.3.

So, I would say that every lineman should be able to do at least 20 reps.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
