That does kinda make sense. If you, as a player, can't keep up, you ain't playing ..... kind of a weeding out process, hopeful that the ones who CAN  play fast can play fast well enough to win games ...

Hadn't really thought about the weeding-out aspect of the process, but you're right. Over a year or two, the players who can't keep up will either be pushed down on the depth chart, or leave the program entirely. It's kind of like what Deion is doing at Colorado, but a slower burn.

I'm optimistic about this year, but I think next year is when we'll really see improvement.

Again, though, just have to hope the ones who do grasp the need for speed are just as good, or better, than the ones who can't and leave ........ I can type like 500 "words" a minute but you wouldn't be able to understand them.

What's funny is Tennesse beat Alabama last year but had fewer plays

In my opinion, the biggest advantage to playing fast is trapping defensive players on the field, thus allowing the offense to continue to exploit mismatches.

Nick Saban mentioned both during his press conference.

1. He said the defensive backs were practicing as if they were playing every down and couldn't substitute in and out, to make sure they can handle any potential mismatches ... because
2. Trying to substitute when USF doesn't can result in too many men on the field.

Assuming they also practiced the same thing before the UT games when it was being run there so they've definitely had exposure to it ...
