Let's play guess the coach . . .

COACH ONE:

First eight years as a mid-major head coach

Record: 141-85

Highest conference finish: 1st, 2nd (twice)

Postseason: 2 NCAA, 1 NIT

COACH TWO:

First eight years as a mid-major head coach

Record: 172-94

Highest conference finish: 1st, 2nd (twice)

Postseason: 2 NCAA, 3 NIT - 1 NIT championship

COACH TWO's record was good enough to get him a gig at an ACC school so don't see why COACH ONE shouldn't be given a shot here ............... if that was your point.

Coach 1 is Ryan Odom, Coach 2 is Brian Gregory. CBG was a good hire for me. He just never got the job done at USF. It doesn’t mean that a coach with a similar kind of coaching record can’t do it. Can never compare two human men and expect the same results of future behavior based on their comparative pasts. You assess their past, listen to them speak in the present, and take a gamble on their future. Sometimes it works out, other times you need to fire them and move on to the next opportunity for success.

That's a pretty nice synopsis ...

My point was, it's time to take another approach. I want a guy who's already won at a high level - a Mike Brey or a Tom Crean or someone like that. Will they set the world on fire? Probably not, but I think your odds of at least getting quickly to respectable are greatly increased and that's all we can ask for and what we desperately need right now. The last hoops hire we had who won as a head coach at a major program was Stan Heath. His last three seasons at Arkansas, he won 18, 22 and 21 games. He didn't tear it up at USF, but he gave us two 20-win seasons and the best NCAA Tournament team in school history. I think many agree that we should not have let him go when we did. BG didn't win at GT. He had four losing seasons in five years there.

Dave, do you want Jimmy Boeheim to unretire and come coach in the sunshine?

Certainly there are no guarantees and no magic formula; however, I tend to agree with you that -- under the totality of our current circumstances -- a coach who has had some success on a bigger stage and carries a bit more name brand recognition has a better chance of changing our direction in short(er) order.

If I’m Odom, there’s no way I’m leaving this:

for the snoozefest that is the Sun Dome/Yuengling Center.

Is that the Utah version of a "white out?"

Maybe if we were above .500 a couple of years we'd see a different atmosphere let alone multiple conference championships and trips to the NCAA tourney over a 4 year run

I remember that from years ago and it’s still pretty cool …. but losing is what generates snoozefests. The YC has been anything but on the occasions where there’s something to get excited about.
