GAME DAY vs Wisconsin USF will open its 23rd season of football and the 150th anniversary season of college football with its biggest home opener since the program’s inaugural game in 1997 (an 80-3 win over Kentucky Wesleyan). No. 19/17 Wisconsin is the highest ranked home-opening opponent ever for the Bulls and the highest ranked season opening opponent since USF won at No. 16 Notre Dame (23-20) to begin the 2011 season. A victory would mark the highest ranked foe defeated at home since No. 11/13 Kansas (37-34) in 2008. USF downed No. 5 West Virginia (21-13) in 2007 for the last top-10 foe beaten and highest ranked ever beaten at home. SEASON OPENERS: USF has won five straight season openers, with the last loss coming in 2013 to McNeese State in then head coach Willie Taggart’s inaugural campaign. The Bulls are 17-5 all-time in season openers and are 15-1 in season openers played at home, with 2013 being the only loss. The Bulls went 7-0 to open the 2017 and 2018 seasons, setting a program record for wins to begin a season. VS THE POWER 6 & BIG TEN: USF has won five straight games vs. non-con Power 6 opponents, including wins vs. Georgia Tech and at Illinois last year, and claimed victory in seven of its last eight such meetings. USF is 2-5 all-time vs. Big Ten teams, downing Illinios in 2017 (home, 47-23) and 2018 (away, 25-19). The Bulls have also faced Maryland (L, 24-17; L, 35-17), Michigan State (L, 21-6), Penn State (L, 23-13) and Wisconsin (L, 27-10). 150th: The two programs provide a stark contrast, with Wisconsin have played nearly 1,000 more games in it history than USF, as college football begins its 150th anniversary season. (See Page 3). RECORD WHEN: The Bulls are 97-61 (61%) in night games and have won 12 of their last 15, 64-29 (69%) in hot games (80+) and 15-32 vs. ranked teams (11-14 at home), having lost the last three. By Ryan Mellenthin@ThatsSoRyan85 Updated Aug 29, 2019, 10:56am CDT Rocky the Bull, the mascot for the University of South Florida, first made his debut in 1965. He is an Anthropomorphized Brahman Bull and his claim to fame is that he won the 2013 Capital One Mascot Challenge. However, that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have a checkered past… For starters? His school didn’t even want him! Back in 1961 when USF was first trying to decide on a mascot, they considered quite a few options, ranging from Florida Chickens to the… am I getting this right? Desert Rats? OK, Florida… The proverbial “seed” of the bull was planted in 1961, by two people that regularly inseminated Brahman’s themselves – Gerald Stack and Jack Boyd, who were both Brahman Cattle breeders and member of USF’s charter class. A year later, the idea of a Brahman Bull was lost in the shuffle, or temporarily forgotten, and the school decided to hold a contest to choose their future nickname. When it was all said and done, the Golden Brahman was named the mascot of USF and unveiled on Nov. 17, 1962. Ultimately the students felt that since Florida is a cattle-raising state like Texas, they needed a mascot similar to that of the Texas Longhorns. Try a little creativity next time, Florida…smh. GO DESERT RATS! No? OK, fine. ... The Golden Brahman remained the school’s mascot for a successful run of about 20 years, which ended in 1982 when the school changed its nickname to the Bulls. ... Like I mentioned earlier, like most mascots, Rocky is anthropomorphized and has a constant angry-ish looking face. One could also go as far as to say he has the look on his face of a person that farted in a crowded elevator and is proud of it. ... Rocky and the Scarlet Knight got into it back in 2010 and the altercation quickly fizzled and the two bro-hugged it out, but as you will notice in the video, at the 30 second mark, Rocky attempts to sweep the leg. Anyone that sides with Cobra Kai, is evil, or completely misunderstood the point of that movie. ... In conclusion: his school didn’t want him, fart in an elevator face and he’s a Cobra Kai Fan.
