Just wondered about this guy. His teammates are doing very well in their pro development and he just sits. Will take a lot of testicular fortitude to see him come back...

Draft signings: 6 first-rounders remain unsigned

Rays: Shane McClanahan, LHP, South Florida
No. 31 overall, pick value: $2,224,400

Projected a top-10-overall choice before fading late in the college season, McClanahan can receive $3,023,380 without costing the Rays a future first-rounder. That's $798,980 more than his pick value, and the gap between the two sides is nearly as large. Because he's a redshirt sophomore, he'll still have some leverage if he returns to South Florida for next season.

And I highly doubt he gets it from the Rays.  It was discussed at draft time that they took him there because he was at a "bargain" price and they had a enough good, high picks that they could afford to take a chance on him even with signabilty concerns.  They might meet him half way, but it wouldn't surprise me if they drew their own line in the sand.

Amazing.  I guess in the era of LeBron, Shane at least wants (more) chump change.

Yeah Idk either. I know it would best for him to take the 2.2, I just don’t see that number rising in a year and there’s a lot of risk involved in leaving it on the table. I also don’t know what him coming back does for us. I know he still throws hard but unless the bull pen improves and we find another AP, idk how many wins he’s worth. I still would like to him on the backend but he would never go for that. There has also been some implications in this thread and others that he may not be the most team oriented person.

All that said, if he turns into a guy that can throw a consistent 7 innings. Then everything changes for him. Maybe this draft was the kick in the pants to make those mechanical changes and throw more strikes.

I would put the chance of his returning to USF at:

0%
