USF OFFENSE PUTS ON A SHOW IN SATURDAY'S SCRIMMAGE ACTION

By TOM ZEBOLD
USF Senior Writer

TAMPA, MARCH 24, 2018 – Several former USF players and a large crowd of recruits were treated to an all-out show in the Bulls' first scrimmage action of the spring Saturday afternoon at the Morsani Complex.

What stood out the most were the fireworks Sterlin Gilbert's up-tempo offense produced while zooming up and down the field. Both quarterbacks competing for the starting job gave pass-catchers prime opportunities to shine and athletic receivers capped off several highlight-reel plays with circus snags for scores.

24577Junior Brett Kean (Lakewood, Ohio) ignited the offense early in scrimmage action by throwing a perfect deep slant to senior receiver Stanley Clerveaux, who made a one-handed catch and took it the distance for a 60-yard score. Later in the action, Clerveaux (North Miami) came down with a jump ball for a 25-yard touchdown connection with Chris Oladokun.

Oladokun, a sophomore from Tampa, set up the second Clerveaux score by hooking up with 2017 standout receiver Tyre McCants (Niceville, Fla.) for a 50-yard gain a few drives after another magical sequence.

24578Oladokun led USF's second scoring drive of the day by tossing it up to Randall St. Felix, who leaped over a defender for a 40-yard catch down to the 1-yard line. St. Felix, a redshirt freshman receiver from Miami, capped off the offense's solid scrimmage showing with a one-handed touchdown catch from about 10 yards out on a brilliant back-shoulder throw by Kean.

USF running backs coach and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Shaun King said he's liked what he's seen from both Kean and Oladokun in the close battle to replace record-breaking Quinton Flowers.

"Brett and Chris, they're grinding," King said. "They sat and they watched Quinton for multiple years and thought about what ...

Wait. Wut?

If CCS allows this to transfer from practice to play, he can be gutful.

Wrs and Qbs connecting often is a great thing.   Team is still loaded with talent but worried the run game is still too predictable.  Hearing sands channel his down hill running mentality makes me cringe a little.  Sands and Bell could be killer in space if they sceme a little more than last year.  Also build in that RB checkdown could be killer as well.  DJ and Marlon Mack had elite hands but hopeful this group has hand talent and an OC that can integrate that into a game.

Well, we already know CCS and Gilbert are terrible offensive coaches...and now the defense is getting smoked? 0-12 is on the horizon.

From what I’ve was told, the defensive line was in the backfield the entire scrimmage.  Part of that is on the O line and the other part is the D line is getting after it. There wasn’t a lot of runnning lanes for the backs.

Glad to hear the QBs are duking it out in a good way, guess we'll see if the passes are really brilliant, or if those athletic/acrobatic catches mean they still need to work on accuracy. Promising...except for the comment about the O-line breaking down. The red jerseys won't be there forever.

The D will be just as good as last year if not better. CCS can coach D and these guys are big and fast...just no experience in certain areas. LB could be an issue but that was also true last year and we were fine. DB will be a strong part of this D. Nice mix of vets and new starters.

The offense looks better because it likely is better than last year.  These QBs know the system and can both pass.  They can throw guys open, Flowers could not do that consistently and didn't actually grasp the offense until later in the season.  I think the talent level of the guys at the skill positions has increased.   At QB, both are more traditional QB types with big arms that can put the ball in tight windows.  The WRs to me have improved and the guys stepping on the field are better than they were last season.  I think the offense will break some records again.  But I do note that the defense typically lags the offense in spring.  So by the  spring game all things are even and you get to see who really got better.
