Is USF a "commuter school" - and how does that term affect you?

Graduated in 2010 and there were a TON of people living on campus or in the immediate area around the school.

Didn't quite have the same feeling of a land grant but USF has a lot of beds and into growing... Many folks also don't recognize how many student specific apparent meant complexes are in the area.

Nice of him to apologize.

I am just enjoying myself for the slack I caught about calling JK on his negative s$&@...There were a few that stood with me though.

At least he knew better than to call us a directional school...As far as his apology, I am guessing it must be that his disposition is a bit negative when it comes to writing and he doesn't intentionally do it. Maybe he doesn't want to cover the Bulls but got stuck with the assignment. Who knows and to be honest I am kind of over him...

It doesn't bother me. I understand why it bothers others though.

Understand this, there is a huge base of students who live on or around campus. This has grown and changed so much the last 15 years. Student life is just completely different. Back in the early 2000s, it was rough at times, but the school refocused and it's worked well.

I think what makes some call it "commuter" is twofold.

First, we do have a large contingent of kids who live in Tampa Bay that still live at home or in other areas of the city that drive in.

Second, about 1/4th our undergrad base is part time adults.

Don't sweat the tag, many will think that way forever. Understand what the school means to you and move on. For my job worked with the University of Houston...that is a commuter school, even Louisville has that feel to an extent.

Jesus Christ. Who cares.

Well, based on the posts in this thread, several people do.

It just means that the school is located in a metropolitan area, but I do believe it is used as a put down in order to devalue the product (our degrees, our teams, our research, etc.) so it upsets me when it's used for that purpose.

Maybe we should come up with our own derogatory term for schools in places like Gainesville or Ann Arbor...we can call them "small market schools" or "schools in low opportunity regions."

We have a larger traditional student population than most schools have TOTAL. Of course we're going to have commuters.

This x100. Our campus couldn't hold the student population if it tried, but I would like to see a geographical dispersion of the "commuters". I'd bet the majority are within 10 miles of campus.

I commuted for my last two years, had to save the $$ and work to finish, and somehow I don't feel my degree is one dime less valuable than any of the other state schools.

Meh, too old to worry about this ****. My degree sits above my desk, I have a very comfortable life and USF played a significant role in helping me reach my professional goals.
