What we really need is an NFL D-League, separate from the NCAA. Pay THEM, and let the students be students.

Why not? They don't produce any revenue...

Because college is about educating the whole person - mind, spirit, and body. Not about making profits by exploiting student athletes for gain.

Back in the day, ALL sports were non-revenue-generating sports.

Plus the Supreme Court ruled on this already.

Sorry I am late to this thread... but people are missing out.

USF WILL HAVE NO CHOICE.

The O'Bannon ruling has said all FBS football and Division I men's basketball players will be paid for their name/image/likness rights.  Title IX will (eventually) force this to pay women the same amount... and the other players in other sports can argue that since their sport can be broadcast (such as Internet sites like Bulls Cast), they deserve funds as well.

USF will be paying bout $9,100 per year... and I would bet that would go to all 500 (or so) scholarship athletes.

$4,100 per year is the "full cost of attendance" differnence for USF

$5,000 per year is the minimum amount for name-image-likeness (this is paid after the player leaves school)

Apparently, you have missed out on the goal of college athletics since the BCS era

Not really... You may be referring to Title IX...

There are reasons why USF doesn't offer Lacrosse, Hockey, and Rowing..

and it has nothing to do with the Supreme Court

(also: USF hockey is a club, not an NCAA sport within the institution)

Completely agree.

And banking on what Jim said above, I personally don't see how USF can fund a team long-term.

A few FBS teams may drop to the FCS level in 10 years

This will weed out the programs that have been mismanaged. good.

The market will decide.

So what happens when Texas is paying out 50,000/year to a players trust?

$5,000 is the MINIMUM.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
