Not being able to get the ball in from the one inch line is a bit on the push from the O-line but Uconn also sold out to stop the run. They had 9 in the box and the LBs were almost on the line. A play action pass would have been wide open.

Agreed, bad play call.  Notice one thing White never does is run for it.  That is always one of the options a QB should consider.  

 

you absolutely do not risk a turnover there. late in the game up by 7, 3 makes it a 2 score game. it would have been dumb to try the pass.

 

Then why the shotgun? or whatever the heck that third down play was supposed to be?

Yep. They even did the victory formation from the shotgun....
