LOL at this whole conversation.  Yeah, I agree that driving under the influence is irresponsible, but there are some posters coming across a bit heavy-handed here, as if they've never had an irresponsible bone in their body.  Let's give the rhetoric a little rest, I don't think anyone has come on here saying that DUI isn't a big deal, or a good thing.

I agree Deters. There are no excuses here. I can't believe there has to be a difference of opinion on this.

Where do you think the difference of opinion is?

Drive hammered, get nailed.

No excuses.

Passed out in drive, facing the wrong way on the road, still in drivers seat? Kid could have killed someone being that impaired.

Some people are responsible and make arraignments prior to going out if they are needed. Guess you aren't.

there's a caption that goes with this, but this is a "G-rated" board... im sure u can figure it out.

listen, there is a massive difference between getting completely shizfaced and then getting behind the wheel of a car, and having a glass of wine or two with dinner and a cop smelling alcohol on your breath.

Florida DUI laws also include other substances, including pain medication, anxiety medication, etc. do people REALLY deserve a criminal record for taking pain medication or anxiety meds to drive up the block?  i've taken klonopin for anxety for 6 years. it calms me down, maybe slight drowziness, but in no way impairs my ability to operate a motor vehicle. am i driving under the influence? according to Florida law, i could be.

it's amazing to me the number of insanely hardline reactionaries that live in Florida and graduated from USF. everything is black and white and there is no room for any gray whatsoever. i feel sorry for people like this. they have no humanity and lack basic critical thinking skills. it's just "oh **** u took a sip of alcohol and got behind the wheel of a car, u belong in jail u scum of the earth!"

and these same people will be begging for exceptions or "understanding" if something ever happens to them or their family.

one of many reasons i left the States. people are so unhappy with themselves they want to impose their misery on others.

A DUI charge can happen to the best of us (everyone from a teacher to a doctor). But, assault on a fire fighter looks really bad.

Only idiots and irresponsible people get DUI's.

Irresponsible AND unlucky ....if you drink and say you've never driven legally drunk, you're a **** liar.

Unlucky? You make your own luck, and getting behind the wheel of a car drunk is you being a moron, not unlucky. I've never set foot behind the wheel when even remotely tipsy, let alone legally drunk.

You had a breathalyzer handy to check yourself?

And do you have one hooked up to your ignition, Paul Crew?

I don't need a breathalyzer because if I enjoy more than 1 drink I don't drive. I also don't have that single drink then leave 5 minutes later and drive. I enjoy it with a meal and typically am at the establishment for an hour or more. I rarely drink anything other than beer and 1 beer of normal ABV over that time frame isn't enough to even come close to making a 200lb man tipsy. If I do go out intending to drink, i always have someone that is a DD, someone I can call, or a cab number in my wallet. Just last week I let a friend know days ahead of time he would need to pick me up from drinking. I got drunk, he came and got me and I left my car there for 24 hours.

Just to be clear, nobody is saying that drinking and driving isn't irresponsible ... just that it's something all most who drink have done at one time or another in their lives.

And, deters, to be perfectly honest, you sound like someone who scared themselves to death at some point driving after drinking and are determined not to have it happen again ... but if not, and you've done that ever since the very first time you started drinking, more power to you .... but I still think you're in the vast minority.

Sure almost all of us have had one too many and got behind the wheel. I can tell you as I got older I have not done it in a very long time but we all knew the cost of what would happen if busted or worse. These players also know the costs. Especially assault on a firefighter. I can not think of one time (no matter how drunk) where I thought it was a good idea to swing at a cop or a firefighter. Even drunk you know they are the authority. Talent or not he has no place in college football. The sooner the NCAA starts hammering players with conduct violations the better off the teams and the schools that supports them will be. Unfortunately so many don't learn and end up thinking they are untouchable. Then they shoot someone while playing the pros.

Exactly ... I'm not afraid to admit I have had two separate times in my life when I should have gotten a DUI (pulled over both times) but didn't.  The 2nd time scared the bejeezus out of me and I vowed never to let it happen again.  I know some very good people that have not had the fortune I had to get out of it.  Thankfully they lived through it and didn't hurt anyone else.

I just don't get the high horses some people seem to be on in this thread.  I guarantee if they've been responsible their whole lives in this regard, there are others where they haven't been so much.  Maybe not something that may have maimed or killed others, but still ...
