Daniels' Utility is Evident in 49ers' Training Camp

Rookie quarterback is also getting plenty of opportunities at receiver, running back and on special teams in bid to make roster

....

Though he was a successful quarterback at South Florida, it’s probably his only chance to make the team.

On Thursday, when 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh was talking about the competition for the No. 2 quarterback spot behind starter Colin Kaepernick, Harbaugh only mentioned veterans Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien.

But then Harbaugh brought up Daniels, the seventh-round draft choice who’s been getting work at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and special teams.

“He’s really progressing at quarterback,” Harbaugh told Taylor Price of 49ers.com. “He’s doing good work there and he’s putting in a lot of time at the receiver position and at the halfback position.

“It’s been impressive how he goes from receiver to quarterback. He puts on the gloves and then he’s back at running back. He’s doing a pretty darn good job. … Arrow up there.”

I'm kind of surprised the view is he can only make it as the backup QB...

The way Kaepernik played last season, no one is going to suggest a seventh rounder is going to beat him out.  The only way BJ could ever start at San Fran is the Way Kaepernik did.  Get the #2 spot and come in during injury and play lights out.

Might not ever start an nfl game at qb, but he can have a long pro career

They seem to be writing a lot about him for a 7th round potential fourth stringer. I think he makes the team because they could lose him trying to sneak him to the practice squad. Team like Seattle would love to have him to duplicate Kaepernick in practice and spit in SF's face in the process.

His versatility and athleticism are going to keep him around the league

As for who could think he'd be an NFL QB. Look at him compared to a first round pick from a few years ago.

BJ in his career at USF:

57.3 comp %, 7.4 y/a, 52 TD, 32 INT. 2068 rushing yards, 25 TD.

Josh Freeman KSU for 3 years:

59.1 comp %, 7.0 y/a, 44 TD, 34 INT. 343 rushing yards, 20 TD.

I think Brad was referring to other positions like Special Teams or RB.  Not starting QB.

Correct Matt, after posting that though, I saw somewhere that LaMichael James may be the punt returner. Maybe that's why the comment.
