USF not helped by new education bill

We knew this was coming. UF and FSU are the only two schools that matter in this state. The state is not worried about having a highly-educated population like they do in North Carolina or California to attract high-paying jobs, those in control in Tallahassee just want to take care of their own.

 

This is yet another reason why I believe UF will be given the keys to Poly eventually.

 

Get ready for more budget cuts and valuable programs to be taken away and given to the 'worthy' schools.

 

It's quite sad, really.

 

*Also, don't forget - If I'm not mistaken, UF and FSU were the ones who wrote the criteria. Believe they are written in such a way as to not allow other state schools to meet their lofty status.

So a BS degree 100% online from UF is > than in class BS from all the other shcools in the state...? Give me a break.

Absolute favoritism... just an excuse to give UF and FSU more money than the other universities to make the gap even greater instead of increasing the competitiveness of the other state universities.

Also... if they are going to remove algebra II and other courses as requirements for HS graduation they need to add in it's place and either or... either vocational training or the algebra II. They should have shop class to train machinists, a vocation where there is actually a shortage in the country.

The 15 million to UF for online classes would better serve the state if used to fund HS vocational training programs.

The new education law the governor signed today is so stupid.  To qualify for the preeminent research university designation, state universities have to meet 11 of 12 bogus qualifying criteria including enrolling new freshmen with minimum "4.0 or higher high school GPAs on a 4.0 scale."  Uh?

TAMPA - An agreement between the University of South Florida and Stetson University College of Law will allow aspiring attorneys to lop a full year off the time it takes to earn a law degree.

The schools announced a new “3+3†program on Wednesday, allowing qualified students to earn both their bachelor’s and juris doctorate degrees in six years. Typically, law students complete a four-year undergraduate program followed by three years of law school.

The Stetson Law School is in St. Petersburg. So they will need to travel but not very far.

Its actually a bad deal unless all the kids they accept are given full-tuition scholarships. 150K+ in loans for law school is not worth it for most law schools unless the school's name is Harvard, Stanford or Yale.

 

edit: there's probably a reason why USF didn't fight this education and send out a bunch of emails telling us to contact our representatives telling them to vote no. my guess is they expect to be along side UF and FSU.

 

I for one don't have too much of a problem with it. Besides the extra funding for the "research" universities, there are students in high school that know college isn't for them and would rather do a trade, but most just go along for the ride because they don't want to be a high-school dropout.
