In some ways this could be good....but please, AFTER the TV deal is inked.

It's not like it's going to affect the football schools, other than whatever name and patch they put on their jerseys. The 7 remaining hoops schools can do whatever the hell they want, since other than Georgetown and Villanova, and to a lesser extent St. John's, most of them have no brand and aren't major players. Marquette deserves some credit, but DePaul, Seton Hall, and Providence suck.

Big East's non-football members meet, discuss possible breakaway

Faced with an uncertain future and the reality that the Big East's next television deal won't be as lucrative as it once projected, officials from the Big East's seven non-football members met Monday in New York and discussed, among other things, the possibility of breaking away from the Big East's football-playing members, a source confirmed to CBSSports.com.

The meeting was first reported by Mark Blaudschun.

SI.com's Pete Thamel is reporting that Big East commissioner Mike Aresco attended.

This development comes less than a week after CBSSports.com's Dennis Dodd reported that the Big East's next TV deal could be worth as little as $60 million annually, meaning the league's seven non-football members -- Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Villanova and DePaul -- will make a fraction of what they figured to make before Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Rutgers and Louisville announced within the past 15 months that they're leaving the Big East. Considering TV revenue has long been viewed as the only tangible reason for the non-football members to remain affiliated with the football-playing members, last week's report combined with the possibility of additional changes has the non-football members now exploring other options. One possibility, a source said, is Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Villanova and DePaul trying to form a basketball-only league and perhaps inviting other relevant basketball schools without FBS-level football programs to join them -- schools like Butler, VCU, Xavier, Saint Louis, Dayton and George Mason.

A source said there is no timetable for a next meeting.

I am numb to all of this. At this point 100% of our effort has to be dedicated to getting out. Lets be honest, football head coaching hire is pretty meaningless in comparison. If we are stuck in this league might as well have kept Skip, he is a proven winner and we just had to wait until the level of competition was lowered to his comfort level. (I don't really mean that... Taggart plus Skip's buy out is cheaper than just keeping Skip .... so if coach Taggart can equal what Skip would have done it is a positive, and I believe he will exceed it)

If the day comes where we play ECU or Tulane and don't have an invite to the ACC/Big 12 then you may have to evaluate if big time athletics is sustainable at USF. Without a major bailout we may have trouble making the debt payments on all of the new facilities we have. And many of our salaries will be unsustainable (both Athletic administration and head coaches).

Am I going to miss Providence, no. What I just said is valid if the basketball schools stay or leave.

Coach Taggart, win ..... win big .... and win fast. Strong football is our only hope of a better future.

The Big East would not die... actually this help the football schools out and makes the conference more legit, especially if the football schools can reach out and convince Georgetown or Nova to stick around.

If the Basketball schools secede then the football schools would keep the Big East name, history, and rights. The seceded basketball schools would be the ones in a hard spot. It will also hurt the TV negotiations but to be far we are already screwed on the front as it is.

Sure we still need to get out of the Big East, but losing this dead weight is far from the end.

Please just DIE Big East. This would possibly force some hands for the super conferences beginning and hopefully we could hop into a better spot than we are in right now.
