When CJL was here, it was obvious our defense was always the focal point of our team. They were tough and caused a lot of turnovers while the offense struggled under our incompetent O-Coordinators. However, this was our identity, and it was a good one especially when we reached #2 in '07. Now under Holtz defense obviously has now taking a back seat while maintaining the incompetent offense. If this year ends like we're all expecting after Rutgers then we seriously need to think about going to hiring a defensive minded coach.

I remember Bud Foster interviewed for the USF job after the slap heard around the world. If Skip does go I highly suggest that Woolard see if Mr. Foster is still interested in the job. After reading his bio and seeing the rankings his defenses are usually in I wouldn't mind giving this guy a shot if hes still available:

Our defense is good but man it gives up a ton of yards and relies heavily upon a quarterback who will make unforced errors. It's painful to watch.

Our defense was not good last week. Points wise, yes. But take away about 5 penalties on their part and we're down by 14 early.

Take away their penalties and our players are gonna be making plays in the backfield.

How exactly is our defense good? What aspect? The d-line? Where is the pressure? The secondary? How can they cover if the qb has enough time? We have two LEGIT LB'S on the outside and 2 quality safeties. Other than that we are really not a good defense. We have proven that. We are a bad defense until we start being creative. It looks like our defense makes it easier on opposing offenses. We stop conservative offenses. Which is why I thought we could beat FSU that year because we still had a good defense and they were a conservative offense. This year we will be blown out by the 2nd half.

Honestly, I think our secondary has outperformed where I thought they would. I realize Nova was like 95/100 on 3rd down but it was because of a lack of pressure from the front seven. You can't expect Baker/Webster to cover guys for 5+ seconds that they were left on an island all night.

Our D-Line is overrated. Mims and Grissom are the only ones doing consistent work right now.

We need to bench Lanaris and play him in obvious run downs only. Put Cliett or Juene out there and blitz the hell out of them. They can be a poor mans Jacquain Williams for us, blitzing and being quick enough to cover.

Did Mark Snyder's team pitch a shutout yesterday? At some point in the 2nd half they were. I'm so proud of my wife. She picked him out on the sideline of their game.

our defense has more holes than swiss cheese They made Nova look like a heisman candidate.

I agree with the OP. I miss our stout defense to support our inept offense. Now we have neither!

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
