matt doesnt call plays.

really?!?!?!  well thanks for the news flash, captain obvious.

he does, however, improvise a lot.  if he ran more, factor in scrambles on broken pass plays.

pass plays also tend to increase when the team is penalized excessively for holding, false start, etc., which is a result of other players not getting it done.

feel free to respond by telling me the sky is blue, tho.

all im trying to say is those stats are pretty strange considering those were our 3 regular season losses, especially consecutively.  oh, and the sky is blue.  now go **** yourself.

Classy post.

when you are behind, you have to pass more. With Grothe's style, if no one is open or he sees an opening, he/s running.

Unless you look at all games and not just losses, you can't make a viable assertion imo.

That explains Cincy and UConn since we were down, but not Rutgers.  The easiest answer is that we didn't do a good enough job running the football in those games.  Thats why we threw so much.

we were penalized a lot at Rutgers.  when a team is consistently in 1st and 15 or 2nd and 20 situations, passes are going to come...

throw in the loss of Walt, and the fact that (for whatever reason) Mike didn't get many touches and it's not too surprising why Matt was throwing a lot that game.

also, if all those sacks he took are factored into his rush totals it might explain a lot.  he was pressured all night and had to use his legs.

Rutgers to me is a bit of an anomaly as we made the plays that were needed to win that game only to have them taken away by some questionable calls.

That's the way I saw it also.  However, if Delbert made one or two of those "missed" kicks it would have been a moot point.

The refs definitely were trying to make sure that Rutgers came out with the W.  IMO

The bottom line here is that Matt can not do it all on his own; nor is he capable like Tebow is.  His size does not permit him to go at it each play - now if he gains 2 more inches and 20 more lbs then he makes a good impact and his bones can absorb the crushing blows better.

Matt is a very very good QB.  When The Bulls get down the coaches call most of the plays into Matts strengths.  As a SOPH he still did well but we must develop a running game this year.  Ford must step up and get 25 carries each game!

Whew - seems like we have gone over this all before.

Of course we've gone over it all before.  We're on a message board, and that's all we could do after we lost those 3 games.

We need to RUN MIKE FORD more.

from what i recall, he didnt get many touches in those games.

then he came out against Cuse and the Ville and ripped off consecutive 100 yard games.

Gregory abandons the run far too quickly.  if that qb choice hand off to BBQ gets stuffed four or five times early, Gregory starts throwing.  see Oregon as the latest example.

Matt is not a very, very good QB.  Is he serviceable?  Yes.  Is he good? Depends on your point of view.  Does he have the POTENTIAL to be very, very good? Yes.

Unfortunately a very, very good QB does not throw 1 more TD than INTs 2 years in a row.  He and we have a long way to go to be what we think we are or can be.

Could it have something to do with Walt being out? Did we only run behind him this year?

Good point Orlando Bull. You can also say during the 3 consecutive loses Walt Walker was out for those three games. Not to mention Taurus Johnson and Amari Jackson (last 2 loses). So just maybe Grothe's increased running and increased passing can be attributed to the personnel

we lose when grothe becomes the gameplan, hence the increase in forced passes.

we'll be fine when everyone contributes and steps up when needed.
