WE want to believe, but until we win a conference championship in football or basketball then make the cfb playoffs or ncaa tournment we are just bullieving. We are closer than before the  basketball and football season started, but far from getting called up to a power conference based on results.

I am talking about the recent years, but have we won an acc basketball or football championship? Have we been invited the the tournament since we were went down to the AAC from a dying power conference? AD MK has had his first successful season as an AD.

A portrait of me in my 52nd year of Bulls fandom.  In spite of more disappointments than I can count, I keep the candle burning.  Go Bulls!

I graduated USF in 1990 and saw the rise of MBB under Bobby Paschal. It was a fun time and at that time I wasn’t aware USF sports were cursed ;) Since then there have been spurts of success but nothing sustained. I am having trouble believing what I am seeing. Every time I tune in to a MBB game I expect the wheels to fall off and we lose that game and then the remainder. That would put me safely back in the dungeon of what we call USF athletics. It isn’t just MBB either. I expect the same for football. However, something in the back of my mind is telling me we may have just turned the corner…if I could just let myself believe. I’m not getting any younger at almost 57. Maybe this is the beginning of the rise of the “sleeping giant”…those older like me know we have been hearing that phrase for decades. Maybe this is it. Believe, believe, believe!!!

Actually, I would say that the rise of MBB came under Lee Rose, the coach just prior to Paschal. Prior to Rose's arrival, USF had a record of 87 wins and 99 losses. Prior to arriving to USF, Rose, in 5 years of coaching (3 years at Charlotte and 2 years at Purdue) won at least 20 wins in every year. He also took Charlotte and Purdue to the final four in his second year at each school. After, the final four appearance at Purdue, he came to USF and went 18-11 in his first year, after the team went 6-21 the year before.

Rose never had a losing record at USF. He is the winningest coach in USF MBB history, by percentage, at 106-69. Although he did not make an NCAA appearance in his 6 years at USF, he became the first coach at USF to beat ranked teams, and he took them to several NIT appearances. If he did not leave for the NBA, he would have probably taken them to multiple NCAA appearances.

I would say that the rise of the program began with Lee and 2 players, Tony Grier, followed by Charlie Bradley. Rose has to be one of the most successful college coaches to never win an NCAA championship.

We are back, everyone!  Now we need to shell out to retain talent.  It takes years to shift public perception.

Joe bag of donuts: I heard USF is good again!
