GAME DAY vs. UAB Blazers

 

Having posted back-to-back 40-plus point scoring games for the first time since September of 2017, the team’s first 2-0 start in conference play since 2018, and back-to-back wins for the first time since 2019, USF will look to win back-to back road games for the first time since wins at UMass and Tulsa in 2018 and back-to-back AAC road victories since consecutive wins at ECU, Tulane and UConn in 2017 when USF returns to UAB for the first time since a 45-20 win between then Conference USA foes in 2004. For the second straight week, the game will pit first-time head coaches. I win would provide the first three-game winning streak for USF since 2018 when the Bulls started 7-0 and the first in AAC games since the 2017 season when USF won four straight and finished 6-2 in the conference.

WHAT BROWN CAN DO FOR YOU: Quarterback Byrum Brown turned 19 last Friday and the following day delivered USF’s first road win since 2019 and first-ever win in Annapolis with a 338-yard, three touchdown day at Navy. The redshirt freshman leads the AAC in total offense (309.4 ypg) and points responsible for per game (17.2). Honored by the AAC for the third straight week on Monday (2nd Honor Roll, POW last week), after two AAC games Brown ranks in the conference only statistics: No. 1 in completions (48), yards (773), yards per game (386.5), touchdown passes (5), interceptions (0) and total offense (414 ypg); No. 2 in pass efficiency (205.4), No. 3 in completion percentage going 48-of-63 (76.19%). His 21 TDs responsible for in seven starts (2 in 2022) are the most-ever for a USF QB through seven starts.

DEFENSIVE PRESSURE: USF’s new defense under coordinator Todd Orlando has dialed up the pressure as USF ranks No. 9 nationally in TFL (8.2 tpg) and No. 29 in sacks. The Bulls have posted three games with 4 or more sacks, their 14 on the year equal the team’s total in 2022 and are the most for a USF team since 2019. The Bulls gained their second AAC Defensive Player of the Week on the season with Tramel Logan earning the honor this week (joining Daquan Evans in Week 3), after USF did not have a defensive player earn the honor since 2017.
