Not sure I'd let one person temper any enthusiasm when you've seen all the other reactions ..... May want to question what kind of further education you're receiving, though. :shade:

Yeah, I'm thinking it's feigned ignorance from a helping of sour grapes.

A couple of weeks ago, in a post regarding the OCS, I criticized the Faculty for not achieving AAU status.  After yesterday’s announcement, it’s only fair and appropriate that I commend the Faculty for this accomplishment. Congratulations to all involved!

However, I received a reality check today on this topic. I’m enrolled in a doctoral program at another university. I asked a professor (who is also the program director) what his opinion of the AAU was, and his response was “what’s that?” Given that the guy has been a professor for 25-30 years, I was very surprised by the response.  After I explained the AAU, he mentioned the Carnegie Research ranking system. Looked it up, and USF is an R1 school. At least he didn’t say that the AAU is a basketball league - that’s a comment I’d expect from a UCF fan…

I still think that the AAU is a big deal, but the professor’s comment tempered my enthusiasm. If it gets us in a better conference, then so much the better.

USF Athletics - time to step up and take the school to the next level!

Carnegie Classification and AAU membership are completely different. All AAU members are classified as R1. AAU membership is like joining an invitation only professional organization — your peers are recognizing you as the best of the best.

I saw a good analogy: US News rankings are like Yelp while getting an AAU membership is like getting a Michelin star.

Honestly, the more I read the more I feel that I'm more excited about this than I would be about a Big 12 invite ....... not saying I wouldn't take it but, and this is kind of a weird analogy, this feels more like joining Augusta National as opposed to Bushwood.

I kind of agree with what you are saying. AAU membership feels like something that is permanent; something that was earned over decades, while Big 12 (or back in the day Big East) invites are based on a whim; on short term based criteria of what makes sense for a conference in any given moment. While the Big 12 conference is still Power 5 today; with all the changes taking place; it's possible that it gets gobbled up by the Pac, ACC,... fairly soon. AAU status will be with us forever; while the NCAA football landscape will continue to change. in football what is up; may be down; or vice versa.

I think if we start winning in football and built the OCS we will find our way into a Power 5 conference relatively soon.

Nebraska would probably have something to say about that.

What makes a school lose the status?

Not sure to be honest. I saw a lot of fuss about it on the reddit cfb page. Something about agriculture and nursing school maybe.
