In the portal era, players can be cut.  Deion cut over 20 players within the past week.  Maybe they keep their scholarship as a regular student, but they don't have to keep you on the roster. 

It's not just players that have leverage in the portal era.  Coaches move on too.

No. Football can't just pay your academic way and not count it against their total. Just like if you play ANY other sport and football, you have to count as a football scholarship.

If a players transfers there never plays a game besides spring game and spring semester? Do they count until they transfer to another school or does the school gain a scholarship when they go in the portal?

I believe he was counting as a scholarship, so now that he is gone they would have one available. From what I have read they lose scholarship as soon as they enter TF. Now some schools might keep them on it, if they think they might change mind or exit the Portal.
