USF Packed With Playmakers at Receiver

By TOM ZEBOLD

TAMPA, AUG. 1, 2017 – USF's explosive, up-tempo offense continues to go fast downfield in fall camp with Heisman Trophy contender Quinton Flowers throwing to a vast variety of targets.

Seniors Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Ryeshene Bronson and junior Tyre McCants are all back to lead a deep group of wide receivers that can do damage against defenses in a number of ways.

Jump balls certainly aren't a problem for USF's towering talents that go up and get it often..

Valdes-Scantling (6-5, 209) and Bronson (6-3, 194) are two of eight big Bull receivers on the roster listed at 6-feet-1 or above. Other huge targets for Flowers include upperclassmen Stanley Clerveaux (6-3, 220), Temi Alaka (6-2, 205), sophomore Darnell Salomon (6-3, 205), redshirt freshman DeVontres Dukes (6-4, 217), along with freshmen Randall St. Felix (6-2, 190) and Kevaughn Dingle (6-1, 185).

"When the ball is in the air, they know we have to go up and get it, and we have to come down with it," said wide receivers coach Charlie Williams after USF's sixth practice of the fall Tuesday afternoon.

Size also comes with plenty of playmaking experience for a receiver corps that helped USF's record-breaking 2016 offense rank fourth nationally in scoring (43.8 points per game) and 11th in total offense (511.5 yards per game).

Valdes-Scantling (St. Petersburg) tied for the team TD reception lead with five last season and averaged 18.9 yards per catch while starting all 13 games. Valdes-Scantling followed

It was only a few years ago that we had almost no WR's to speak of. Now we have a boatload full. LOL

Best problem in the world to have:  how to distribute targets.

Hate to be the defensive backfield of other AAC teams.

I think VS should be on some watchlists and I see him getting drafted as well.  Perfect combo of size and speed.

Yeah, I remember the Florida game we were using people converted to WR.

I think they were called the "misfits".

I still remember that tall white JUCO receiver who was expected to come in and fix things. God, Holtz was terrible.

Pretty excited.  I don't see how we will be better on offense this year but it will be fun to watch us try.  I am old enough to remember when we were a defensive team.  Hopefully we will become more balanced.

Balance would be nice.  I'm in the same boat.  While I think our offense will be very good, I cannot believe it will be better, regardless of playmakers.  I also think our D will be better, how much is TBD.
