Joaco needs to limit his three putts. He made his first bogey because of that.

In the US Open he had four three putts over two rounds and that was enough to miss the cut.

Getting adjusted to the faster greens on the PGA tour is a problem for most amateur golfers.

He is T-25 at the completion of the first round.

If he just shoots even par in the second round he will make the 70 player cut.

Most of his stats are very good, with the exception being putting. If he could improve somewhat on that part of his game he will move up the leaderboard.

His stats can be viewed by clicking his name on the leaderboard and then selecting FULL SCORECARD.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (July 6, 2017) - Joaquin Niemann of Chile made a splash on day one of The Greenbrier Classic and at 2-under he is tied for 25th place and in line to make his first career cut.

Playing at The Old White TPC Course, Niemann who played in last months U.S. Open, started on the second nine and he turned in even-par 35 as he bogeyed the 15th and then recorded a birdie on the 17th. Following a par on the 18th hole Niemann, the top-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, really found his grove early on the back nine carding birdies on Nos. 1 and 3 before parring his way to the house.

Two other amateurs are in the field this week including NCAA Individual winner Braden Thornberry. Just weeks after finishing fourth at the FedEx St. Jude Classic Thornberry struggled on Thursday despite a strong start. Thornberry started on No. 10 and he birdied the 12th hole to reach 1-under but from then on it was a struggle as he bogeyed five-times, including four-times on the front to post a 4-over 74 that leaves him in a tie for 141st.

The final amateur in the field is 2016 West Virginia Amateur Alan Cooke. After the tournament was cancelled last year due to flooding an invitation was extended to Cooke for the 2017 event. A former West Virginia golfer, Cooke birdied three-times during his Thursday 9-over 79.

-5 with 3 left to play. Looks like he'll make the cut barring a meltdown. Cut will be -1.

He double bogeyed the 16th, but birdied the 17th and is now at -4.

He finishes with a par and shoots another round of 68.

He is currently -4 and T-22, with some players still on the course.

The other two amateurs missed the cut.

The NCAA champion, amateur, Braden Thornberry was +8 for the tournament.

Making the cut will guarantee Joaco more World Amateur Golf Ranking points and will solidify his lead over #2 Maverick McNealy.

McNealy has been invited to play the PGA John Deere Classic next week and will likely narrow the margin between them.

They are in a race to see who ends up #1 at the conclusion of the US Amateur in August.

McNeally was the #1 last year and won the McCormack Medal. As such, he will play in The OPEN Championship later this month and earn additional points.

Joaco will play in at least two top amateur events in the coming weeks to offset some of the points McNealy will pick up by playing in those pro events.

The two will then face off in the US Amateur, August 14-20.

Meanwhile, incoming golfer Won Jun Lee won his match today for the East Team in the Wyndham Cup.

He will certainly help our men's golf team during the fall season.

If Joaco makes it to USF for the spring semester, as currently planned, we should be in a good position to make an NCAA run in the post season.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
