Joaco completed a solid first round  score of 74 (+2).

Yes. I posted that after the morning group finished.

Niemann (+2) is currently tied for third among the amateurs.

On the US Open leaderboard you can check the "only amateurs" box to see just them.

http://www.usopen.com/scoring.html

After the second round the field will be cut to the top 60 players and ties.

For Niemann to make the cut he will probably need to shoot 71 or 72.

I'm most interested in seeing how he does compared to McNealy, since they are competing against each other for the #1 WAGR.

T75 Joaquin Niemann (a) +2 2:31 PM 74

T75

Maverick McNealy (a) 7  +   73

Thanks for the link. This makes it easier to follow. Would be something to see the kid make the cut.

Niemann, at 18, is the youngest amateur in the field.

At the moment two of them are within the cut line.

One of them, Scottie Scheffler, played in the US Open last year and missed the cut. That experience helped to do better now:

“Last year, I was a little less comfortable, kind of getting used to everything,” Scheffler said. “But now I’ve done it the second year in a row, I feel much more like I belong. Mentally, I think that’s really big.”

He's even par for the round and needs to a couple of birdies to be able to make the cut.  He has quite a few holes to play, so there's a solid chance.

Joaco shot 75 in the second round to finish the tourney at +5.

He did get some face time on TV by making a long birdie putt on the 16th hole.

You can watch that video by clicking on his name on the leaderboard.

http://www.usopen.com/players/45486.html

Considering that six of the top ten professional players in the world also failed to make the cut, he did extremely well for himself.

I'm sure that this has been an invaluable experience for him.

Hopefully, he will still be ranked  #1 WAGR at the end of the US Amateur in August and that will get him into the 2018 US Open (and the 2018 Open Championship).

Joaquín Niemann Already Thinks about a second major: "I'm Going To Get Much Better Prepared"

EDUARDO MIQUEL
By El Heraldo On Jun 18, 2017

After the great adventure at the US Open in Erin Hills, Wisconsin, ended for Chilean Joaquín Niemann, the analysis of his sports performance is not long in coming.

The talagantino of 18 years finished his first participation in a major in the US Open of golf after failing the cut in the contest, about which he emphasizes to have lived "nice experiences" after sharing with the best ones of the world in the discipline.

"It was a great week, I had great experiences, I was able to train and play with the best golfers in the world and I realized that I have a game well prepared to compete against the good ones," he told El Mercurio, the number one amateur world ranking.

The golfer showed great category and that is quite clear, although his goals go further and for it will continue training.

"This is a big boost and I proved that I have level of blows. When I play another major again, I'll get much better prepared, and that's the positive thing I see after the US Open. I have to keep training hard, "he said.

Despite his short experience, coach Eduardo Miquel, highlights the performance of Niemann in the competition but remarks that his manager "can more."

"Obviously I was very happy. As his coach, I know Joaquin can do more; But he played well, he was calm and he needed to put some putts. It has to take into account that it affects the little experience to get accustomed to the difficulties of the court, one of the most technical in the world, "he said.
