need a home/home series in the buyout that can be boughtout for $1mil

That's not a bad idea. Work in a home and home with a top tier program.

And just how do you think that works?  If we can convince say Charlie Strong to come here do you think he would agree to that?

Yes. You use their own words in the job interview against them. I'm sure they ask that the coach at least be committed to the school for 3 years and they all say "Absolutely." Well, put your money where your mouth is. All it does is insure that the coach will be here for at least 2 seasons. The $2 million buyout is chump change for P5 programs and won't be an impediment to the coach getting a new gig elsewhere. This has to be the way the G5 does business moving forward if they want to succeed, especially in the AAC.

The bigger the buyout we demand from them if they leave the bigger the buyout they demand from us for terminating them.

I hope Harlan and company see the writing on the wall. We need to make sure that the contractual buyouts for our head coaching contracts are our new source of revenue moving forward. If a coach is going to be committed to the school they should have no problem signing with a $6/$4/$2 million buyout clause. $6 million after one year, $4 million after 2 years, $2 million after three years, and then drop it $500,000 per year thereafter. Someone like Kiffin will come in for one season, go 10-2, and then take his show on the road to greener pastures. We need to make sure that we have the funds available to find a good replacement each time this happens.

Memphis screwed up following Fuentes, with only a $500,000 buyout for Norvell. One more good season (9-3) and he could be gone as well. We don't want to repeat that mistake, because the names that are being suggested to replace CWT are 1 to 3 year guys. Welcome to the new normal.

Big buyouts can cost you candidates.  Allegedly the above is what stopped Kiffen from signing a deal with Houston.

you do realize that they work both ways right? we signed Holtz to a huge buyout. how is that working out for us?

Taggart's buyout was $1.7 million and that didn't make Oregon bat an eye. Also, we should be committed to a HC hire for at least 3 to 4 years. This does one of two things: 1. Makes our program more stable with coaches here for the long haul or 2. Makes our program more stable with a consistent flow of new revenue.

Yes, but the AAC has the MOST attractive jobs for up and coming coaches. The best competition outside of the P5 in the most fertile recruiting grounds. If everyone in the AAC takes this stance then we all win. This is the one bit of leverage we have over the P5 and we must exploit it. It is really only punitive if a coach ups and leaves after 1 or 2 seasons, after that, it is much more reasonable. Hell, drop it down to $1.5 million after 2 years, but definitely make money off of it.

Taggart was here 4 years. Every transition ha some instability.

If you have to fire them the revenue becomes an expense, see the payouts to Holtz and Heath.

You make it more palatable in year 3 and beyond. We shouldn't be firing coaches after 1 or 2 seasons anyways without cause and then we would have a contractual provision that would eliminate their buyout if it was for just cause.

If my agent signed me to a contract with a buyout like that, he'd be fired on the spot.

The only agent who'd make this deal is Master P.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
