The CFP ranking matters to the G5 schools in contention for that auto NY6 bowl.

Rankings are important beyond the top 4. I for one want to know how we stack up against others. True,  it is subjective but it is a starting place for analysis.

They could be interesting in that regard but his post was about the affect going into next year and since there are no CFP rankings until the season is 3/4 over, the finish this year is inconsequential for next year's ranking.

Ok, got it...I missed the context. Yeah, he is probably right then. Perhaps it influences some of the voters in the geographical area of the school.

Being ranked in all three polls at the end of the season is important because it increases the probability we'll be ranked in both of the two polls that come out pre-season.

Being ranked 5-25 in any poll is important because it gets us airtime, and more good publicity is a good thing.
