How did USF get into the former Big East?

Recommended Posts

I'm still not seeing the benefit...

non-revenue producing programs seem to have zero impact on WVU

Because the tennis team costs money to travel.  So it's cheaper if you can fly to Stillwater then take a bus to Norman and then fly home.  THAT is what "travel partner" means.

We seemed okay financially in the Big East without UCF...

The reverse is true for the AAC.

I think college football and the P5 have changed things a lot since our entry into the former Big East. It's all about the money now.

"You don't want to just add two teams and split with whatever money you have 12 ways instead of 10 ways if they're not bringing value to it," Stoops said. "But if they're bringing value, then sure, it needs to be 12."

Also, I read an article that said the Gnats were basically doing everything wrong as an athletics department at the time. Hence, they weren't even in the picture (to join the former Big East when it was still good).

What does being a travel partner or rivalry have to do with them being in the same conference?

I think you completely missed my point

Its obvious that we don't 'need' them in order to get an invite but something tells me that if we get an invite at some point UCiF will get one too.  Why not work together and try to expedite the process. Like it or not guys, UCiF is our rival...

I'm sure it would be a cheap charter!

A good friend of mine who works in athletics (not at either school now, but he was at UCF during this time), says that UCF's athletic department feels basketball was a MAJOR factor in tipping the scales to USF.

yeah heard the Basketball Arenas was a major point. USF's was state funded while UCF's at the time was basically a Garage. Also Lee Roy Selmon was a big name helping you guys at the time.
