ESPN and the P5 are not interested in adding a new conference to their exclusive club.  They cover the entire nation, and they have enough baggage teams that are just in there by association--and the baggage teams they have ensure that the good teams get the guaranteed wins they need to go to the playoff.

They'll eventually expand, but they won't add a new conference:

Instead, they'll just take who they want on a team by team basis.

I understand the college football playoff system is not officially part of the NCAA--so this whole P5 designation is not an NCAA thing, but sort of more like an exclusive fraternity.  Is that correct?  Does anybody know how it works?

What criteria needs to be met for the American to be considered a "Power" conference?

The other "Power" conferences would have to want to split their money with us. I don't see that EVER happening without a HUGE tilt in power that couldn't be ignored. Like multiple teams from the American winning a national title.

"Everyone" chose to allow a group of people to pick from a selection of good ole boys. Then you have extra games and a Jerry Jones money orgy.  Everyone wins.  Then you run a commercial with a Dr. Pepper vendor.

American has been getting a lot of pub this week with the 3 ranked teams. We got their attention, hopefully we can finish with a strong Bowl showing against some of the P5..

We might have a couple of teams ranked in the pre-season top 25.

Is there any chance that Memphis makes the playoff this year or is their SOS too weak?

Well I remember two B12 teams got left out last year.  I think this thing is made for the Alabamas of the world.
