  1. Lost his opener 58-0 to Georgia Southern. Just saying.
  2. You'd have two years after he sat out one year. Oddly worded tweet, saying he's all in, has no plans to transfer, then name-dropping possible schools.
  3. It's inappropriate, yes, but they're not USF athletes yet. They're not even signed to be USF athletes. I imagine someone will have a conversation with him about representing USF properly now, even though he's not on campus yet. Guy has 5,000-plus followers, so even for a teenager, there should be some expectation of saying the right things. ...
  4. I have to think Holtz treats this at least the same way he handled the Duval arrest: had he agreed to any pre-trial deal in which he pleaded guilty or no contest, he would not have been allowed back on the team. For Duval to be reinstated, he had to be found not guilty or have the charges dropped (which they were). Even if you thought Dunkley had more leeway as a scholarship player, he's accused of something violent and against a woman.
  5. Guys, we wrote the first day that police weren't notified of the crime until 5:15 p.m. on the night of the FSU game. Game was well under way by time interviews were completed and photos taken for evidence. He was arrested after the game.
  6. Popek wasn't at left tackle Saturday. Damien Edwards was.
  7. I asked Holtz about the out-of-bounds catch last night. I'll post the quotes in a bit. Coaches on sideline have terrible angle of far sideline as far as in or out. Holtz asked coaches in the booth, they said it looked like he had it, and ESPN didn't show a conclusive replay (didn't look like he had possession before final in-bounds step) until after next play. Bad call, but sounded like USF did what it could to check on viability of a replay ...
  8. McGillis said on Twitter today that he expected to have Bulls in end zones and big U in middle of field ...
  9. I don't think I equate a 2-point change in average scoring defense with going from 14-14 to 7-15 ... would think there are other areas where there's been a more significant dropoff. Are those Big East-only stats or for entire season? Sometimes can see a big difference between the two ... good thinking, though.
  10. Schools don't have a choice. League doesn't call up USF and say "Are you interested in playing on a Thursday night?" If they did, USF wouldn't have done it this past week. Any open week is available for use in maximizing TV deal for Big East and its schools.
  11. The run game wasn't there at all Thursday. RBs had 14 carries for 27 yards. Offensive line had no push at line of scrimmage. USF has every desire to establish the run and control the game from the line of scrimmage -- it just wasn't there Thursday. Opening play of the game, they line up with Murray and Lamar in same backfield, and Lamar's dropped for a loss. Talked to Popek and Murray tonight in interviews -- they want to carry the load for the offense and are disappointed the run game wasn't there against Rutgers. http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/bulls/content/holtz-disappointed-offensive-lines-mental-busts
  12. You guys remember Rutgers score from Leavitt's last season? 31-0. The year before? 49-16. Compare that with Holtz's three games: a one-point win an overtime loss and a loss where the game was tied with 3 minutes to play ... Not saying program's in a good place, but USF hasn't done well against Rutgers since the first time USF played them in 2005.
  13. Odd that you put weight on the altruistic value of what he said based on the size of the media outlet he was talking to. Room full of reporters Monday, he has no idea who's national, who's local. He mentioned Deonte in postgame Saturday, did it again Monday. He's a good kid, one of quite a few on the team who try to deflect some of the praise sent in their direction to others.
  14. It's terrible, evil, reprehensible. But don't engage with him, or his girlfriend. You're playing his game if you do. Let him be the one who was hurtful. It's not going to improve the situation.
  15. Skip made it clear Tuesday that Willie Davis isn't ready. Battles -- who was suspended last week -- is someone he trusts much more in a larger role. Just spot carries and special-teams work for him for now.
  16. Times hasn't been the official paper in years. Was when I came on the beat in 2004, but stopped in 2008. http://www.usforacle...80#.UEftEKPhf9s And to be honest, it's a marketing relationship. At the Times, had nothing to do with level of coverage on the editorial side of the newspaper. Newspaper gets signage at USF venues, booth at Fan Fest, etc, and USF gets advertising in sports section. Both papers have relationships with the pro teams in town as well.
  17. Asked Skip today. Hard to know for sure with an ankle sprain, but he's still in play for Nevada, then would just be a question of whether he can play for Rutgers. Hard to look beyond that right now.
  18. It's a former player. Don't think it means quite as much as if that came from current player. Think the Nevada folks think he's on current team.
  19. Guys. No reason to think it's a longterm injury right now. He's missed two days of practice. Not on crutches, not in a boot. Shaw would have to miss most of the season to justify holding him out of end of Big East season. Seems doubtful right now.
  20. Coach addressed it today. Doesn't know severity because it's an ankle sprain. Funny that ESPN is citing "sources."
  21. I've tried to reach him for a while. Haven't been able to confirm. USF already has four kickers on scholarship right now -- Bonani, Veron, Brockhaus, Kloss -- though two of them will graduate and Veron could be done after this season. That doesn't count Ciabatti, either ...
  22. That's pretty positive stuff in that last post. "I think USF will have a great shot at beating Miami and would not be surprised if his team won 10 games." Doesn't sound like someone who hates USF.
  23. Just to be clear, Big East wouldn't go to 14 until 2015, with 14th school joining same time as Navy. Championship game starts in 2013, first year the league has the minimum 12 members.
