  1. Talked to Aresco for 20 minutes yesterday. Lots of same sentiments. He's very clear in saying that winning is the best PR a conference can have. They have to get it done on the field. What would you guys have him say?
  2. This is a lifetime contribution evaluation then, not as it relates to current importance? Either way, no idea how you can consider Bo Jackson important in any context. Losing him hurt the Bucs, but there were so many high first-round picks that completely flamed out, I think he gets lost in there somewhere. I think it's a list generated for conversation, and it's doing its job to that end ...
  3. If there's a tie and no head-to-head, it's based on best record against each team starting from top of standings on down. I'd think sweeping Pitt would carry a lot of weight that way if it's a tie not involving pitt ...
  4. Thought you meant "closer" in a proximity sense. Yes, absolutely, Starkville will remind him nicely of Cairo/Bainbridge, etc. ... Talked to him even before the Trickett news came down, and he'd said he wasn't going to comment. We've traded texts since. I think he's getting more comfortable doing interviews, but I don't know that it's too indicative of who's leading.
  5. Sandberg is going to be a pro baseball player. Kinnan has been saying it since before Taggart got the job. Unless he is completely underwhelmed by the offer he gets after being a high draft pick, no reason to think he's going to Starkville.
  6. For what it's worth, geographically, Tampa is closer to Cairo than Starkville. 70 miles closer. I'll leave any other comparisons to you guys ...
  7. What makes you think I'm not asking him questions?
  8. I tweeted a link to the Pennlive story. Hope that clears it up a little ...
  9. Can't imagine there are any cuts to pool for assistants in basketball. Not an area where you'd want to trim even if you were making budget cuts ...
  10. Guys, he's said he's not coming to USF. He's going I-AA. Once that's established, what else is there to discuss?
  11. Even if USF wins out, Bulls now need two losses each from Louisville and Notre Dame (instead of one) for Big East title ...
  12. If you transfer down from I-A to I-AA, you're live to play immediately. He'd have two years of eligibility at I-AA ...
  13. I wouldn't say that he think he's too good for USF. He just said he's not going to USF. Without knowing specifically, I'd think that Carnes -- having barely gotten on the field in three years -- will slide down to I-AA where he can play a lot for two years, rather than sit out another year to maybe play in his final season of college football.
  14. He has to sit out a year to play a year. So USF would be making a two-year investment in a single season of an athlete who hasn't played much football in the last three seasons. Having said that, the schools he considered most besides Nebraska were USF and WKU (because Taggart was there), so there should be a lot of familiarity, if not mutual interest.
  15. JVwvu, there's nothing to stop media outlets from talking to a recruit on an official visit. NCAA by-laws say a school cannot do anything to publicly promote an athlete coming on an official visit, nor can they facilitate an interview with a media outlet during an official visit. As a general rule, I don't like interrupting a visit, but everybody does things differently.
  16. Most teams, negotiating with a top-five-round pick, will include a clause that will pay for reasonable costs of tuition so that an athlete can work toward a college degree during or after his playing career.
  17. Clayton should be fine by the time he arrives at USF. Current timetable has him at full strength long before practice starts in October.
  18. White has already been up to USF several times to take in spring practice, do as much as he can to prepare himself for the fall. His interest in playing for the Bulls isn't in question -- what fans don't know is how lucrative a signing bonus he might have to turn down to come to campus.
  19. His high school football coach said pro baseball was "definitely a possibility" when we wrote feature on White just after signing day. They'd been told he could be as high as fifth-rounder then ... http://www.tampabay.com/sports/college/mike-white-hopes-to-answer-usf-bulls-quarterback-questions/1274253
  20. Pitt job is going to Duquesne's Suzie McConnell-Serio ...
  21. Giddins was listed among the injured players as the team went through the draft. Shoulder still limiting him this spring.
  22. Scrimmage was closed. We only get Taggart before practice, so this morning was first opportunity to ask him about scrimmage from day and a half ago ...
  23. Florida isn't a good comparison. Gators play 4-5 ranked teams a year just in conference play alone. Compare USF to its peers -- conference rivals, other schools in similar position and status in college football hierarchy. What kind of deals are they getting? How many BCS opponents? How many I-AAs, etc.
