* UMass hasn’t hid the fact that it would really, really REALLY, REALLY like to end up in the American Athletic Conference, which would be an enormous move for football and a significant one for everything else.

* The AAC employs quite a few employees who were with the Big East before the Big East and AAC split. McElroy and Big East commissioner Mike Aresco are friendly, according lots of people. I’m not suggesting that would be enough to get UMass into the AAC. But if there are negotiations to be had, McElroy can help the process.

Would this be for all sports except football or would it include football as well

It would make for a good geographic rivalry with UConn. I'm not sure if there is a history there or not.

Good Lord, I hope not..at least not in football. You think we have problems here you should see this Umass program. Only a handful of alumni wanted them to move to 1A and they put on a full court press to see it happened. Even as a successful 1AA program their attendance was dreadful. They now play in the Pats stadium to small crowds "with a golf clap" when they score. The only way this happens is if the university puts serious dollars in their on campus stadium (which hold around 25k and has NO bathrooms) and sports programs in general. They do hold a nice amount of endowment $ and it is an excellent academic institution.

It could serve as a stepping stone in Aresco's "Grand Plan". The complete domination of the Canadian market.
