White not up to speed in USF QB race

Joey Knight

Times Staff Writer

TAMPA

The season's straightaway is nearing, yet Team Taggart remains mired in the qualifying stage. Three games in, the owner still is seeking someone capable of steering his offense out of the pits.

"We're trying to find every which way we can to get some offense, especially from the passing game standpoint," said USF football coach Willie Taggart, whose team's pass-efficiency rating (75.9) is next-to-last in the 123 teams ranked by the NCAA in Division I-A. "There's no limit to who can play over there or who will be playing over there."

Or is there?

Taggart had barely reached the podium for Saturday night's 28-10 Florida Atlantic postmortem when he was asked if it was time to give 6-foot-4 freshman Mike White a crack behind the wheel.

A Mr. Football finalist for the state at Fort Lauderdale University School last fall, White threw for 2,201 yards and only two picks, leading his team to a 13-0 season and a Class 3A state title.

But Taggart indicated White's not ready to lead the Bulls offense — yet.

"We're not going to put him in and do that to him right now," Taggart said. "He's not ready yet, and we're not going to do that to him. I mean, we all want to find a quarterback that can be consistent and help this football team, and we will."

Was just wondering when he would be taking over.  Looks like the JK era has begun.

Don't use up his eligibility if he isn't ready and it isn't necessary.

The best quarterback on the team is its 37 year old head coach.

True, but think he used up his eligibility.

"For me, I never considered it that way (as a stepping stone), honestly. When I was offered the head job at South Florida, and I'm sincere about this, I never thought I would ever go anywhere."

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
