I love people who are happy with crappy play

Perhaps a deeper analysis is in order, rather than generalizations.

The defense played very well and is to be commended. I don't care whether MSU is good or bad offensively. The USF defense made some terrible teams look great last year. I am confident that won't happen this year.

Going back and looking at last week's game and how it played out, the only drive that was bad on defense was the third quarter drive. In that drive, I'd agree with CWT that some guys lost their discipline and tried to be heroes rather than playing defense. When combined with how atrocious the defense was last year, I'd say the defense has already improved immensely and I look forward to seeing the defense progress as the year goes along.

The passing game is beyond terrible at this point. Some of that is QB play, some is line play, some is not being totally comfortable with the play calls and how they should be executed. The offense isn't second nature right now, too much thinking going on. Eveld is better than Floyd started out, but I think Bench is best option. Unfortunately, I guess he doesn't have a grasp of the entire playbook and/or minor injuries have impeded his progress. Eveld understands the offense, doesn't make bad decisions, but doesn't get his passes off quickly enough. But he may be good enough against most of our other opponents that don't have the ferocious pass rush that the Spartans have. I think/hope we'll see more of Bench as we go along and the offense can progress to a mediocre level this season.

Oh, we may need to make a change at punter. That one punt killed us yesterday. I'm hoping the kid gets through the nerves and is consistent here on out.

53 points and 425 yards to McNeese State. Verdict on this year's defense is not in. I don't think you can say its good right now though. Edited by Joe

I do think we can say it looks better than last year's defense, which was my point.

Who did we give 53pts up to last year? And yes it will happen again this yr and already did. I was sitting behind a MSU fan yesterday and he said their hope is to average 14 offensive pts a game!! Now if we play Miami or Louisville and hold themin check then I will agree you were right and it was just one really bad game by our D but until then I don't see anything to tell me this D is improved.

And when last year did we fumble on our own 7, throw a pick 6 and throw another pick deep in our own territory?

The defense didn't give up 53 points.  And the defense gave up exactly one scoring drive yesterday, for 33 yards.  This, despite being put in poor field position all day.

You expect our defense to hold Louisville and Miami in check when we go three and out on every drive and turn the ball over in our own territory?

I agree the 53 points is skewed...BUT we have up 425 yards to go with it.

Saying the defense is better at this point is a jaded opinion

This coming from a Mizzou fan. A team so out of its depth in the SEC  that all they have to look forward to is the cupcakes. Wait until UGA puts a 50 burger on them.

You know, you don't have to give him a rise EVERY time.

I was definitely proud of the improvement, proud of the heart they brought on the field. If we bring that effort every game, we'll put up some Ws--I have no doubt.
