Was going to say, I am not aware of any sheep, rams or any such animal that is routinely shorn on our schedule.  

 

Taking this too far, but couldn't resist some fluid mechanics:

 

Shear work  = (power * time)/mass

 

So maybe he meant that if by dumb luck we're stronger for longer, we'll beat a team that's bigger than us? Sounds logical to me.
