Enough of this piss poor mentality

USF is a new school compared to most other major universities and has a baby football progam (16 years). We have accomplished MAJOR feats in those 16 years and will continue to do so. How many 16 year old football programs do you know of that have sold out an NFL stadium on more than one occasion? Have you been to campus recently? You know all those huge buildings going up and all those improvements everywhere? It's not because we suck, it's because we are growing and succeeding in more ways than one. We had 2 off years due to a garbage coach, get the f*ck over it. Are the rest of you THAT MINDF*CKED by what Holtz did? Graduation rates are going up, student acceptance has become more strict. Enough of this defeatist p*ssy ****, man the f*ck up.

football program has underachieved and has been a disappointment

no other objective way to look at it

I would challenge you to find another program who has accomplished more than we have in their first 16 years. What would we need to do for you to be pleased Steven? Win an NC? Win the Big East? We are 16 years old, the fact that we are even IN the Big East is amazing in itself.

You think being in the Big East was an accomplishment??

If I would have asked you that in 2005, what would you have answered? Yes, it was an accomplishment. You love to play semantics, don't you Trip.

Nothing to do with semantics ... To me, to accomplish something means to do something worthy. Accepting an invitation doesn't really fall under that umbrella to me.

If I hear one more person say USF is a commuter school I'm going to crack my head on the desk. Don't like 80% of the students live within 5 miles of the campus now? On Campus housing has been sold out 2 years now and the apartments just off campus are pretty much slap full..... commuter my ass....

Unfortunatly perception is reality, call it what you want and use all your stats about more dorms on campus than UF. We are viewed as a commuter school.

A big issue is the number of part time and night students. While a lot of students live close to campus, etc, there are a lot more factors involved. Campus life, etc.

It's tough being a large university in a major metro area and NOT being a commuter school. ASU and Ohio State are flagship schools in their states, which help.

I'm not saying USF isn't a great school, but in most cases we're the 3rd public university ( with a couple schools) that kids look at when looking at a public university in Florida.

I'm not sure if its improved, but when I was in school. (Until '05) a lot of the dorms and surround apts emptied on the weekends. Who knows.

Besides, who cares if we're a commuter school.

Therapy, I now see why you feel the way you do. Even in 2003, there wasn't much to cheer about and we were nowhere. That feeling does not leave a person once you graduate (I'm sure you learned that in your major). I graduated in 2008, and I can tell you things were MUCH different then. I can only imagine how things have changed now in terms of attitude towards the school and the "commuter" tag. Things are changing quickly, and they are all in favor of our University.

I love this university and bleed green and gold, but let’s look at some things.

Large Commuter School

Non AAU Member

Abysmal 6 year graduation rates

Ranked 170th Nationally by US News

Relatively new football program

Plays home games in an NFL stadium, 12 miles from campus

Has actual attendance around 30K for non-marquee matchups.

Never finished higher than 3rd in the Big East, Never finished ranked.

1 NCAA Basketball tournament in 20 years.

Resides in the 13th largest media market.

Looking at this, it is pretty clear that USF is where it is supposed to be in terms of conference re-alignment. The only thing we have going for us is the large media market, but all the other schools in this conference were chosen for that reason too. The Big East gave us a huge gift because they wanted to maintain a presence in Florida, our lot never improved.

What if we are stuck in this conference for the next 5 years? If things do not improve, what makes us think we will be first in line to get into another conference? Yes, Florida has fertile recruiting grounds and maybe FSU will bolt for another conference at some point. However, we cannot bank that in 5 years USF will be in a better position than UCF under that mindset. The Big 12 might not choose to expand to Florida, we just don’t know.

Instead of blaming others I hope we start looking at some of these things, and look for ways to improve. Administration and the fan base should take ownership. I for one will continue to support USF athletics via donations and attendance at football games. I will make it a point to have all 6 of my season tickets used. I will also continue to press administration to improve academics. We have to take some responsibility.

What scares me the most is the entitlement mindset, and that we somehow deserve to be at the table with the big boys. Let’s sit idle and see if we get picked up. Sure if the ACC or Big 12 came calling we would gladly accept, but that gift might not ever come.

Fat, Drunk, and Stupid is no way to go through life, lets clean up...........

Going to disagree with you on just about everything. The University of South Florida is one of the Premier research Universities in this state. AAU status will come with time. The money is there now but that is not enough. AAU membership requires results. Just look around you, USF just had a professor win educator of the year in the entire nation. The results are there as well and just need a few more years of proof. USF is no longer the fall back school kids are getting denied here and getting into FSU and other schools on a consistent basis now. I'm sure that works both ways, but not something you could say a few years ago. USF is also considered the one of the leaders of the up and coming institutions ranking top 5 yearly. Our academics are fine as I am sure University Presidents would be well aware of this information. I really hashed out at DW in the past but I know see the light. Our Administration knows that USF's way into a major conference is to bring to the table upgrades in ALL SPORTS. Football needs to catch up, basketball needs to stay hot, and baseball needs new leadership which will come after this season.

Commuter school. You can keep thinking that way, but that is not true anymore. Housing is full to the point where the school just put pressure to speed up the Fontana Hall property remodel project. It will be ready for the fall...

You disagree with everything yet you do not refute any of these claims that USF just does not stack up that well with the schools in the power conferences. Yes, we are certainly improving, Judy is doing a great job. But we are simply where we should be in terms of the conference situation.

You’re not very smart if you think a university that is 50 and in some cases 100 years younger than most of these schools it is in competition with, would have the resources to automatically compete with these schools on a yearly basis. The reality of the situation is on the wall. Many on here accuse Judy of not doing her job and I laugh at them. Look at the schools academics before and now after her arrival. You say let's clean it up all happily like no one is doing anything. The administration is working their ass off get us out of this mess. It will take time and the university is right where it should be. On the cusp of becoming a great institution and after a little more than 50 years. I would say that is far ahead of the schedule anyone could have predicted.

Please lay to bed the OCS statement. Has it help UCF get into a better conference then the Big East? UCF a school whose recent athletic results are far superior to ours. Athletics and the university made a commitment to improve basketball and non-revenue sports facilities. They saw this mess on the horizon and reacted and did the smart thing. USF is not willing to build a metal disaster of a stadium just to say we have one. They choose to spread out our dozen eggs instead of laying them all in one basket. How anyone can say that was the wrong decision is shocking to me. Look at the state of the football program. So we put the 100 million down on a new stadium and build something like Minnesota has. Now we have a start of the art stadium for a currently failing program and awful facilities for every other sport. The correct decision was made and playing in Ray Jay is right for this university at this time.

Is the university where it should be? Yes it is, it is exactly where should be given the circumstances. Is it where it wants be? No, it shows this by the improvements it is making to itself. The University of South Florida is gaining ground fast in the central Florida area. Every time I go out I am shocked by how much bull’s apparel is now walking around instead of hanging on a rack. When I first came to love this University, a member of my family was and still is one of greatest women's basketball players this school has ever seen. I have been around it ever since that time. While it is only 10 or so years the improvements in that time frame are ridiculous. I am refuting every claim you make as you are acting like nothing is being done. I used be like your kind on this board, coming on here stirring the pot for the helluva it and seeing everyone’s reactions. Sit back and look around you, the University of South Florida is and has done everything it can to improve and makes itself more attractive. The rest is out of its hands.

Judy is doing a great job and Doug is doing well for the university also. We are improving. Sorry it isn't UF or FSU yet. We are shedding the commuter tag and acceptance is getting more selective. The school is encouraging taking more classes to finish faster and putting policies in place to improve students grades and also to weed out the slackers/dumbasses. I really see us improving greatly academically in the next 5-7 years. As for athletics, I just wanna win, dgaf where but just win.

The thread was about us being exactly where we should be in the conference shakeup, based on those factors. And based on your response It appears you are agreeing with me.

Now sitting back and saying everything that comes down the pipe "is out of our hands", well I just don't have that mentality.

Meh, I graduate in the Spring and I know potentially a dozen or so kids that live at home with their parents and commute to usf. I took 2 night classes this semester and there were usually 3-4 people over the age of 30 in those classes, and that's not factoring in the younger people who may still live at home. As others have said, it's part of the nature of being in a big city. Spouses go back to school, people from Macdill use the GI bill, and others just don't want to leave home and they get to save money. Nothing wrong with any of the scenarios, and we can't just deny them (assuming they are qualified) just because we want to be less "commuter-like".

Schools like fsu and UF have plenty of commuters, but those commuters usually don't live at home and are first time in college 18-21 year olds, not adults going to night school. Also, another reason it's seen as a commuter school is because the area isn't walkable at all. No bars in walking distance, restaurants are a few traffic lights away, and it's practically suicide to ride your bike along fletcher or fowler. Students that like to live on campus are forced into their cars to go anywhere. It's a sprawling campus in a sprawled out city. Its an Urban Planning issue and a mindset that goes far beyond what USF can control.

Btw, I lived on campus my first 2 years and for the past 2 have lived across the street on 50th street.
